The role of a Land Use Planner involves applying planning principles and regulations to support a wide range of development projects. This requires technical expertise, strong analytical skills, and effective communication abilities to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, developers, and community groups.
Duties will include, but are not limited to, attending public meetings, presenting to Councils, conducting site visits, and occasional travel throughout the area.
A planner is expected to adhere to and/or comply with regulatory and/or legislative requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Management: Lead private planning projects from inception to completion, ensuring objectives are met within established timelines and budgets. Work as part of project planning teams to draft proposals and deliver project tasks such as key reports and statutory obligations and support the Project Manager at public and Council events.
- Plan Review, Development and Approval: Our Planners lead development proponents through the Planning Act processes. This requires excellent client services, a fulsome understanding of planning policy and zoning by-laws and effective communication with clients, municipal staff,
Councils and Committee’s of Adjustment.
- Municipal Planning Services: Planscape also offers Planning Services to a number of northern municipalities. This role involves managing municipal communications, evaluating development proposals for pre-consultation meetings, providing “staff” reports to Council and attending Council meetings where required.
- Project Work: Planscape bids on and delivers a number of policy planning projects at any given time. You will be required to support (and in some instances lead) policy planning project work to complete project deliverables and legislated engagement events. Projects such as new Official Plans, updated Zoning By-laws, Strategic Plans and Community Planning Permit Systems are the range and scope of projects regularly completed at Planscape.
- Manage Multiple Priorities: Planners must independently manage multiple projects and deadlines, ensuring that all tasks are completed efficiently and to a high standard. This involves prioritizing tasks, coordinating with team members, and maintaining a proactive approach to problem-solving. As a boutique land use planning firm, Planners are expected to support various projects and Senior Planners where required.
Qualifications and Skills
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Geography,
Environmental Studies, or a related field.
- Membership: Full or Candidate membership with OPPI required.
- Experience: 2-4 years of experience in land use planning with a proven track record in providing independent planning work and providing planning opinions and analysis.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software, experience with GIS, CAD or other design software an asset.
- Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of Ontario's planning legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Communication: Strong verbal, written, and public presentation skills, with the ability to effectively engage and present to diverse audiences.
- Problem-Solving: Robust problem-solving abilities to navigate planning challenges and propose innovative solutions.
- Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead projects effectively to meet deadlines and provide excellent client service, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
Career Development and Compensation A Land Use Planner at Planscape Inc. has numerous opportunities for professional growth and advancement. Mentorship from Senior planners will be available to support your career trajectory. Compensation will be determined based on experience and expertise, with an expected range of $45 - $55 / hr. A minimum of 37.5 hours per week is required.
