The role of a Land Use Planning Technician involves supporting the Planning team with tasks such as drafting reports, preparing maps, charts, gathering data, assessing zoning compliance and performing other technical analyses related to land use planning applications and projects.

This requires a combination of technical expertise, analytical skills, effective communication abilities to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, municipalities, developers, and the public.

Duties include, but are not limited to, supporting Planners in the submission of land use planning applications in various municipalities, preparing site sketches to support applications, technical analysis of application compliance with zoning by-laws and preparing reports. Duties will also include supporting Planners with project work in the form of data gathering, report drafting, responding to planning inquiries, the creative presentation of engagement materials and the development of mapping to form OP and Zoning By-law schedules or other policy related maps. Occasional travel or site inspections may be required.

Key Responsibilities

- Data Collection and Analysis: Gather, compile, and analyze land use data from various sources, including maps, surveys, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Report Preparation: Assist in the preparation of planning reports, technical documents, and presentations to support planning decisions and projects.
- Plan Review and Evaluation: Review development applications, site plans, and zoning by-law amendments for compliance with local, regional,



and provincial planning policies on behalf of public or private clients as part of the process for obtaining land use approvals.
- Mapping and GIS: Create and maintain maps using GIS software to support planning projects and land use analysis. Prepare site plans for use in applications.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that planning activities comply with relevant municipal, provincial, and federal regulations and guidelines.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with planners, engineers, architects, and other professionals to support comprehensive planning initiatives. Provide multi-client support to Planners within the office.

Qualifications and Skills

- Education: Diploma or degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Studies, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in land use planning or a related field.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in GIS software, data management, and analysis tools. CAD drawing capabilities are an asset.
- Knowledge: Understanding of Ontario’s planning legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and public engagement.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret and analyze complex data and present findings clearly and concisely.
- Attention to Detail: Keen eye for detail to ensure accuracy in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
- Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills to address planning issues and propose practical solutions.

Compensation to be determined based on experience and expertise in the range of $30 - $40 / hr. A minimum of 37.5 hours per week is required.
