PURPOSE:
Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society (Bent Arrow) is a non-profit organization that provides unique programs and services to Edmonton’s urban Indigenous population. The organization was created in 1994 when Brad and Shauna Seneca identified the need for programming for Indigenous children and families based in traditional Indigenous values and teachings. This year we are celebrating our 30 anniversary, and we have grown as an agency where we have over 250 staff and 23 programs, but our mission remains to “build on the strengths of Aboriginal children, youth, and their families to enable them to develop spiritually, emotionally, physically, and mentally so they can walk proudly in both the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities.”
THE PROGRAM:
Nikihk Indigenous Housing First is an intense home visitation and follow-up program designed to assist those experiencing chronic homelessness. We provide in-home follow-up support, with cultural and spiritual support and education.
THE ROLE:
The Landlords Specialist will assist staff in ensuring positive relationships between staff vs Landlords, they will also mitigate any expectational costs caused by our participants.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with internal teams within Red Road Society to ensure interactions with landlords and teams.
- Knowledge of Residential Tenancy Act (RTA)
- Knowledge of Lease signing and liability's
- Address any landlord inquiry or concerns, while providing supports throughout issue resolution, close out and follow-up.
- Foster relationships between landlords and Housing First staff and participants Develop long term, mutually beneficial relationships with landlords.
- Update landlords with accurate contact information for support staff and agencies
- Mitigate Exceptional Costs between agency vs Landlords
- Manage multiple issues simultaneously
- Provide Copies of lease agreements and rent checks to landlords when requested
- Providing short-term problem-solving opportunities, identifying and assessing supports within agency vs Landlords
- Ensuring Landlord is fully informed of Husing First mission and Philosophies
- Attend appointments, meetings with clients for the purpose of providing support, mediation, or interpretation/clarification with the landlord
- Participating in agency responsibilities including but not limited to: team meeting, reflections,
representing the agency at community meetings, safety and security monitoring, and other related duties.
- Partnership responsibilities including but not limited to: intake, partnership meetings, case conferencing, training and committees.
- Ensure all information is being documented in the ETO database, attend team meetings and attend supervision
- Performing other related duties as assigned by the Team Leader
- All staff are to be cross trained in Nikihk Housing 1st positions for the purpose of cover off as needed and requested by the Team Leader
- The Landlord Relations Specialist shall provide time sheets by the last day of each month to the Team Leader.
- The Landlord Specialist shall provide a weekly schedule to the Project Team Leader or his/her designate on a weekly basis. To include but not limited to:
- The Landlord Specialist is to be responsible for all administration of within the scope of services. To include but not limited to:
- Reporting / payment of mileage claims
- Reporting parking for reimbursement
- Payment Authorizations for Housing Furniture and Supplies
- ETO database entry is up to date within 24 hours and has all current and valid client information
- All client hardcopy files are organized and kept up to date and has current and valid client information

COMPETENCIES:
ESSENTIAL:
- At the discretion of the Project Team Leader, or his/her designate, the Housing Landlord Relation Specialist may be required to attend orientation and other appropriate courses/training as designated by the Agency or program policies.
- Must have own vehicle, provide drivers’ abstract and current drivers’ license (without issue)
- Current (within 6 months) Criminal Record Check and Child & Family Intervention Check.
- Knowledge of Aboriginal Cultural and Traditions.

QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE:
- 2 years to less than 3 years of experience of delivering community-based services.
- Experience of networking with a range of partners and stakeholders.
- Experience of working at all levels across teams and/or departments within an organization.
- Local travel on behalf of clients and the agency is required, must have a valid class 5 license and reliable vehicle
- Enthusiasm for being part of the solution to end homelessness in Edmonton.
- Must have the ability to empathize with those experiencing significant barriers in their lives.
- A significant understanding of the issues of poverty is essential.
EDUCATION:
- 2-year Diploma in a related field or equivalent
- Knowledge of Landlord and Tenant Legislation.
- Understanding of current housing market and trends, vacancy rates, and rental amounts.
- Knowledge of motivational interviewing skills.
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of poverty related issues, trends and services particularly within, but not limited to the urban Aboriginal population is essential.
- Able to show a demonstrated commitment to Bent Arrow’s mission and values, policies and guidelines.
- Must understand the impact the loss of culture identity and intergeneration residential school syndrome has had on Aboriginal people.
SALARY: $49,100-$51,555 LOCATION: In person.
