Job Summary

Student Mental Health Services is seeking compassionate, reliable Ontario Tech students to join our Peer Mentor team. Peer Mentors provide non-clinical, one-on-one emotional and social support to fellow students, helping them feel heard, supported, and connected.

Responsibilities/accountabilities

- Meet individually with students, in person or virtually, based on student preference
- Offer warm, compassionate listening and a safe, respectful space for students to discuss wellbeing concerns
- Support students with wellness and self-care strategies, including mindfulness, relaxation, confidence-building, and social connection
- Share information about relevant campus and community resources when appropriate
- Encourage students in working toward personal, academic, and wellness-related goals
- Maintain required appointment and program documentation
- Attend mandatory training, weekly supervision, and team meetings
- Participate in outreach initiatives, workshops, and mental-health promotion activities as needed

Required Skills

- Current Ontario Tech undergraduate or graduate students
- Robust active-listening and communication skills
- Empathy, warmth, compassion, maturity, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness
- Ability to build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds and experiences
- Comfort discussing mental-health and wellbeing concerns within a peer-support role
- Commitment to confidentiality, appropriate boundaries,



reliability, and teamwork
- Resilience and openness to feedback and learning

Required Education

- Must be a current Ontario Tech Student - Graduate or undergraduate
- An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered

* Verification of Academic credentials may be required

Required Experience

- Experience in mentoring, peer support, helping roles, leadership, customer service, facilitation, or health and wellness outreach is an asset, but not required
