Reporting to the Production Area Superintendent – Power & Utilities, this position has overall responsibility and accountability for the day-to-day operation and EH&S; performance of the Power & Utilities blocks. As the technical subject matter expert, they are expected to guide, train, and lead the Power & Utilities operations team members, support maintenance planning and execution, and liaise with technical, maintenance, and turnaround departments. The successful candidate will serve as a key operational leader, ensuring secure, reliable, and efficient utility operations while supporting commissioning, startup, and long-term plant performance. Additionally, with a First Class Power Engineering certification, this position serves as the backup to the Chief Engineer in accordance with Alberta Boiler and Safety Authority (ABSA) requirements. Ensure a safe workplace and adherence to Air Products occupational and process safety standards, operating procedures, and work practices. Ensure environmental compliance and support sustainability objectives. Train, assess, mentor,
and develop a team of operators and technicians. Develop site talent through coaching, training, progression planning, and succession development. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, operational excellence, and employee involvement. Coordinate scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities to maximize plant reliability and availability. Ensure compliance with Preventive Maintenance and Mechanical Integrity programs. Manage and support the site's Basic Safety Process (BSP) and Process Safety Management (PSM) programs. Participate in risk management activities including hazard identification and mitigation efforts. Act as a key participant in accordance with the Emergency Response Plan during onsite emergencies. Develop, revise, and maintain operating and production procedures. Support process safety activities including permit-to-work, confined space entry, pre-startup safety reviews, management of change, and incident investigations. Coordinate with maintenance, engineering, technical, and turnaround teams to support project and maintenance execution. Serve as the primary Power & Utilities contact for interfacing with neighboring facilities and external stakeholders. Provide backup coverage to the Chief Engineer as required under ABSA regulations. Minimum Hiring Requirements:
First Class Power Engineering Certificate with a related Technical Diploma and experience leading operations in large industrial facilities, or a Bachelor of Engineering in a relevant discipline. Minimum 15+ years of relevant industry experience including: Five (5+) years in a supervisory role in manufacturing operations involving highly hazardous chemicals such as refining, petrochemical, power generation, or complex industrial gas facilities.
Experience in brownfield and/or greenfield plant commissioning. Experience in the operation of Combined Cycle Cogeneration facilities and Water Treatment systems. Robust working knowledge and experience in process safety programs including permit to work, mechanical integrity, incident investigations (RCA), process hazard analysis (HAZOP/LOPA/OPHR), management of change (MOC), procedure development, and emergency response. Demonstrated capability in successfully leading change management initiatives and implementing operational improvement programs. Proven ability to lead direct staff reports and influence stakeholders outside direct reporting relationships. Excellent communication skills and robust business acumen with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization. Highly proficient in Microsoft Office applications. Physical Requirements:
Must be able to climb ladders and stairs. Must be able to wear appropriate PPE and physically perform all required field activities. Must be comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces. This role is designated as a safety-sensitive position and requires successful completion of a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and may be subject to ongoing testing in accordance with company policy and applicable law.
