Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Manual Machinist to join our growing Hydraulic Cylinder Shop in Cambridge, Ontario. In this role, you will be responsible for operating manual lathes and manual milling machines to manufacture, repair and modify components used in hydraulic cylinder repairs. When machining workload allows, this person will also work alongside our hydraulic technicians assisting with cylinder disassembly, inspection, repair, assembly and testing.
We are looking for someone who is comfortable in a repair environment where every job can be different. This is a good opportunity for a machinist who enjoys troubleshooting, one-off work, repair machining and actually seeing how the parts they manufacture are used.
Your mechanical knowledge, attention to detail, and proficiency with various tools and technical drawings will be essential in delivering high-quality parts efficiently. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to complex projects while honing your craftsmanship and technical expertise.
Responsibilities
Manual Machining
- Operate manual engine lathes and manual milling machines
- Manufacture and repair hydraulic cylinder components including:
- Rods
- Pistons
- Glands / heads
- Bushings
- Pins
- Rod ends
- Threaded components
- Spacers and miscellaneous repair parts
- Machine components from drawings, sketches, samples or existing damaged parts
- Perform one-off and small-run repair machining
- Accurately measure components using micrometers, verniers, bore gauges and other precision measuring equipment
- Cut internal and external threads
- Machine seal grooves, O-ring grooves, bearing fits and other precision features
- Work with various materials including carbon steel, ductile iron,
bronze and other common hydraulic repair materials
- Inspect completed work to ensure dimensional accuracy and proper fit
- Work closely with hydraulic technicians to determine repair requirements and machining solutions
- Assist with determining whether damaged components can be repaired or need to be replaced
Hydraulic Cylinder Shop When required, assist the cylinder shop with:
- Hydraulic cylinder disassembly and assembly

- Identifying damaged or worn components
- Installing seals, bearings and bushings
- Honing and general cylinder repair work
- Hydraulic pressure testing

- General shop duties as required
Previous hydraulic cylinder experience is an asset but is not required. We are willing to teach the hydraulic side to the right machinist.
Skills
- Strong mechanical knowledge with the ability to interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
- Strong experience operating manual lathes and manual milling machines.
- CNC experience is not required.
- Ability to perform basic math calculations related to measurements and tolerances.
- Ability to work independently from drawings, sketches or sample parts
- Strong understanding of machining practices, tolerances, fits and finishes
- Ability to use precision measuring equipment
- Experience cutting internal and external threads
- Comfortable performing one-off and repair machining rather than repetitive production work
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
- Able to work safely around heavy components and lifting equipment
- Comfortable getting hands-on and assisting in other areas of the cylinder shop
- Good attention to detail and commitment to quality
Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a hands-on manual machinist who enjoys repair work and doesn't want to stand in front of a CNC machine running the same parts all day. You should be comfortable being handed a damaged component, a drawing or sometimes just a sample part and figuring out how to make the replacement.
We need someone who is willing to machine when there is machining to be done and jump into the cylinder shop when the team needs another set of hands.
If you enjoy solving problems, making parts, working on different equipment every day and seeing a repair through from damaged component to completed assembly, we want to hear from you.
