Job Summary The City of Pickering is seeking a dedicated and motivated individual to join our team in the role of Mechanic, Municipal Garage.

The incumbent inspects and performs mechanical repair and certification of the Corporation’s fleet of vehicles, equipment and machinery including fire vehicles and equipment, heavy vehicles and equipment, small engines, light duty vehicles and equipment to ensure efficiency and quality service. The incumbent also performs stand-by during off-duty hours according to a rotating schedule.

Primary Responsibilities

- Performs MTO annual safety certifications on Municipal vehicles and equipment in accordance with the highway traffic Act Reg 611.
- Determines the extent of repair(s) required to Corporate owned vehicles and machinery by diagnosing faults and malfunctions.
- Repairs designated vehicles and equipment under the auspices of a certificate of qualification using generally accepted procedures for that type of vehicle or equipment.
- Tests repaired vehicles and equipment to ensure proper performance.
- Cleans, lubricates and performs other preventative and routine maintenance work on vehicles and equipment.
- Completes all required daily reports, including repair orders for input into computerized maintenance program.




- Provides support for winter control operations including the performance of stand-by duty
- Additional secondary responsibilities may apply and will be outlined in the , which will be provided to candidates selected for an interview.

Education and Experience

- Successful completion of Secondary School education or any combination of education, job-related training and work experience deemed to be acceptable by the Corporation.
- Certified Truck and Coach 310T Mechanics Licence issued by the Province of Ontario (including a combination of 6,720 hours of school time and training).
- Certified Automotive 310S Mechanics Licence issued by the Province of Ontario (including a combination of 7,220 hours of school time and training).
- Ozone depletion certification (ODP) is required.
- Forklift certification is an asset.
- Three years’ experience as a vehicle mechanic, to include experience utilizing computerized system diagnostics to identify and repair computerized engine issues.
- Experience with welding techniques and fabrication is required.
- Experience working on fire trucks including working with high pressure water pumps, aerial ladders, and foam suppression systems as well as Emergency Vehicle Certification (EVT) is considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Required to maintain a current level of technical competency and skill with changing technology and equipment.




- Demonstrated working mechanical knowledge, including diagnosis and repair, of heavy and light equipment and vehicles and Hybrid vehicles.
- Must be medically and physically fit to perform the duties of the position.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of personal computers and Windows based computer applications.
- Must be able to work in a team workplace, as well as carry out duties and responsibilities independently under own initiative.
- Must be prepared to undergo a Criminal Reference Check as a condition of employment.
