Context of the project: The Mechanical Lead Engineer (MLE) is responsible for leading and coordinating mechanical engineering activities within railway projects. The role ensures that mechanical designs — particularly piping and pneumatic systems — meet Quality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD) objectives and comply with technical, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Day to day activities:
Mechanical Design & System Integration
- Lead the design, development, and integration of mechanical systems, with a robust focus on piping layouts and pneumatic circuits used in rolling stock applications (braking systems, compressed air supply, control systems).
- Define and validate mechanical architectures, interfaces, and technical solutions in accordance with system requirements.
- Ensure proper integration of piping and pneumatic components within space, structural, safety, and maintainability constraints.
- Review and approve mechanical designs, drawings, and technical documentation.
Project & Technical Leadership
- Coordinate and supervise mechanical engineering activities within the project scope.
- Plan and track mechanical deliverables, ensuring compliance with project milestones.
- Lead design reviews, manage technical risks, and implement corrective actions when required.
- Act as the technical reference for mechanical topics, especially related to fluid and pneumatic systems.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with system engineering, electrical, industrialization, manufacturing, and validation teams.
- Manage mechanical interfaces with suppliers and external partners.
- Provide technical support during manufacturing, installation, testing, and commissioning phases.
Candidate requirements
Must-haves:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, preferably in the railway, transportation, or heavy industrial sectors.
- Expertise in piping design and pneumatic systems (schematics, routing, sizing, validation) used in rolling stock applications (braking systems, compressed air supply, control systems).
- Experience with CAD tools (CATIA V5) and mechanical design processes.
- Good knowledge of engineering standards, safety, and quality processes.
- Knowledge of GD&T;
- P.Eng
Nice to have:

- Proven leadership and coordination skills in a project environment.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple interfaces and priorities.
- Effective communication skills with multidisciplinary teams and suppliers.

In accordance with our compensation practices, ALTEN is providing the salary range associated with this opportunity. Final compensation will be determined after considering several factors, including professional experience, skill set, educational background, certifications, and geographic market conditions. The current target salary range for this role is $95,000 – $100,000 per year.
