Position Description The Mental Health Support Worker works from an anti-oppressive framework to provide mental health support on behalf of the Agency to women in the community and in custodial settings.
The Mental Health Support Worker will provide a range of supports and services, including but not limited to individual supportive counselling, program delivery, skills development, support with daily living, assistance with recreational activities and independent exercise/leisure, referrals based on self-identified needs (i.e., vocational, parenting, housing, etc.), accompaniment to activities external to the Agency, and institutional visits, primarily within provincial correctional facilities, for support, programming, and residency applications.
A primary component of this role is to liaise regularly with the Manager of the Community Residential Facility and provide ongoing mental health support and counselling to women residing at the CRF, including both provincial and federal clients.
The Mental Health Support Worker will also contribute to the development and delivery of new programming on an ongoing basis, based on the identified needs and interests of women accessing Elizabeth Fry Kingston services.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual mental health support and supportive counselling to women in the community and custodial settings.
- Support women with developing practical skills related to independent living, emotional regulation, wellness, and personal goals.
- Facilitate and assist with group programming, workshops, and recreational activities.
- Provide support and referrals related to housing, employment, education, parenting, healthcare, addictions, and other self-identified needs.
- Provide ongoing mental health support to women residing within the Community Residential Facility.
- Work collaboratively with CRF staff and management to support residents' individual needs and reintegration goals.
- Accompany women to appointments, community activities, and other external services when appropriate.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with community partners and service providers.
- Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of new programming.
- Maintain appropriate documentation and records in accordance with Agency policies and confidentiality requirements.
- Work from an anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, harm-reduction, and client-centered approach.
- Participate in team meetings, case consultations, and other Agency activities as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Social Sciences, Social Service Work, Mental Health, Psychology, or a related field.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with women involved in or impacted by the criminal justice system is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Criminal Code of Canada, Correctional and Conditional Release Act, and Ontario Mental Health Act, as well as applicable correctional and Community Residential Facility policies and standards.
- Familiarity with anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, and harm-reduction philosophies and frameworks.
- Awareness of the Elizabeth Fry Society, its history, mandate, and current role within the community.
- Demonstrated commitment to working with women experiencing intersecting needs and systemic barriers.
- Robust interviewing, assessment, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
- Flexibility in working hours, including occasional evenings or weekends, as required by programming and client needs.
- Valid driver's licence and access to reliable transportation is considered an asset.
- Current CPIC required.
- Enhanced Security Clearance through the Government of Canada is required for this position.
Compensation and Contract This position is a 6-month fixed-term contract, working 20 hours per week, at a rate of $23.00 per hour.
The successful candidate will be required to work on a flexible schedule based on program and client needs.
