Duties

- Successfully and effectively occupy the role of “Helper” in the active non-medical Traditional care for Spirit, for Indigenous clients (and their family members) as they are preparing to go to the Spirit World due to chronic illness and disease or aging, and for those who have gone to Spirit World suddenly and unexpectedly.

- Help Traditional Medicine people (Traditional Healers, Knowledge Carriers, and Ceremonialists) before, during, and after ceremonies and teachings related to showing the way home and conducted in hospitals, palliative units, hospices, and client homes - for clients and families.

- Assist Traditional Medicine people who are leading large community Circles to introduce Teachings to decolonize death; complete all organizing of time and location, arranging food, creating promotional material

- Ensure that materials and Traditional supplies required by Medicine people are in good supply and prepared for transport to off-site locations where care is provided.

- Explain Traditional care for Spirit and promote understanding of protocols for using and handling medicines, bundles, and other sacred items, while caring for clients and their family members in institutional settings.

- Complete sensitive intake information with client and/or client family members; develop and activate an immediate plan of care which includes crisis interventions.

- Daily travel to clients and family in hospital, palliative units, hospices etc, where you will be advocating to resolve issues of income, accommodation, food, travel needs, etc., for families who have come from outside the GTA to support loved ones.

- Work with Band administrators across Canada to negotiate arrangements for repatriation of client to home territory, once client has started their journey to the Spirit World





- Ensure strict adherence to confidentiality regarding client and client family care

- Initiate and complete all funeral arrangements, burial, or cremation – supporting and guiding families through this process

- Provide continued care for Spirit to family members for 1 year after loved one has gone home

- Able to work effectively in institutional settings at multiple locations each day

- Be willing to learn how to effectively use confidential electronic medical record (EMR) and quickly become proficient in maintaining accurate charting in that system

- Prepare and process referrals from western medical institutions and Indigenous communities across the GTA and beyond

Qualifications & Experience:

- Minimum 2 years of work experience in a setting where Traditional Healing and Medicine is used to care for Indigenous community members

- Demonstrated skills and experience in the role of Helper to Medicine people and understanding and respect for the diversity of their land-based knowledge and teachings

- Understanding and respect for Traditional laws and protocols and commitment to following these in your daily practice without exception

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills- able to build trust and maintain healthy relationships with clients and their family members as well as colleagues at AHT and staff in other care sites

- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy in documentation

- Commitment to cultural safety, confidentiality, and discretion

- Knowledge of referral processes and Traditional care workflows

- Valid Ontario driver’s license
