Job Summary The Overnight Transitional Housing Support Worker provides safety, support, and monitoring for women residing in Ryandale’s Women’s Supportive Housing Program. This position ensures a calm, stable, and secure environment throughout the night while supporting residents who may be navigating trauma, homelessness, mental health challenges, addiction recovery, or transitions from unsafe living situations.
The Overnight Support Worker works primarily independently, maintaining the safety of the home, responding to resident needs, documenting events, and supporting early-morning routines. This role requires strong boundaries, good judgment, emotional regulation, and an understanding of trauma-informed and women-centered care.
Salary/Wage and Hours of Work
Rate of Pay: $22–$24 per hour (based on experience) Schedule: Part-time overnight shifts (8-hour or 12 -hour shifts, depending on schedule) Shifts: Overnight (e.g., 8:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m.); weekends and statutory holidays may be required. Some daytime hours may be available depending on business needs
Responsibilities and Duties
1. Resident Support & Engagement
- Provide supportive, respectful, trauma-informed interactions with residents as needed during overnight hours.
- Respond to resident concerns, emotional needs, or crises using de-escalation and safety-planning techniques.
- Assist residents with basic needs during the night (e.g., support if unwell, trouble sleeping, safety concerns).
- Encourage and support early-morning routines as residents begin their day.
2. Safety & Monitoring
- Conduct regular safety checks and walk-throughs of all areas of the property throughout the night.
- Monitor overall wellness and behaviour of residents, documenting any concerns or notable events.
- Maintain a secure building:
ensuring doors are locked, alarms are active, and safety protocols are followed.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies, including mental health crises, medical situations, or building-related issues.
- Complete incident reports promptly and accurately.
1. House Operations
- Maintain cleanliness and order in shared spaces during quieter periods (e.g., kitchen, common rooms, hallways).
- Perform light housekeeping tasks to ensure a safe, hygienic environment.
- Support move-ins and move-outs when required by preparing rooms or documenting maintenance needs.
- Communicate maintenance issues or safety concerns to management in a timely manner.
1. Administrative Duties
- Maintain accurate and confidential documentation, including shift notes, incident reports, and resident updates.
- Review and follow up on relevant information from previous staff shifts.
- Support residents with completing forms or logging information when appropriate.
- Ensure proper handover to morning staff, communicating key updates clearly and professionally.
1. Health & Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all Ryandale safety policies, emergency procedures, and trauma-informed practices.
- Report hazards, concerns, or unusual activity immediately.
- Maintain familiarity with fire safety equipment, evacuation procedures, and WHMIS guidelines.
Job Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of women’s experiences related to trauma, violence, homelessness, addictions, and mental health.
- Ability to remain calm, grounded, and solution-focused during crises or unexpected situations.
- Robust emotional regulation, boundaries, and judgement while working independently.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to de-escalate conflict using trauma-informed and harm-reduction principles.
- Basic computer literacy and comfort with email, documentation, and incident reporting.
Education
- College Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Community Services, Addictions & Mental Health, Psychology, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent experience will be considered.
Experience
- Experience supporting women in shelters, transitional housing, mental health, addictions, VAW (violence against women) services, or community-based settings is preferred.
- Experience with crisis response, safety planning, or overnight work is an asset.
- Lived experience is valued and considered an asset.
Additional Requirements
- Acceptable CPIC (Criminal Record Check).
- First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain.
- WHMIS knowledge (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to work overnight shifts independently.
- Ability to manage light physical tasks (lifting 20–30 lbs, moving supplies, etc.).
