In collaboration with all Programs and Services, members of the Patient Experience and Safety Program and teammates within the Patient Safety Team, the Patient Safety Specialist focuses on developing and implementing corporate-wide initiatives that improve patient safety and a patient safety culture. Specifically, key functions include leading strategic patient safety projects for the corporation in collaboration with teams, providing expert consultation to various clinical groups regarding issues related to patient safety using key patient safety principles (Incident Analysis/ Root Cause Analysis, Human Factors, Systems Approach, FMEA, etc.), contributing to the achievement and maintenance of corporate patient safety standards and Required Organizational Practices, developing patient safety policies that foster a culture of safety in collaboration with others, and delivering education related to patient safety using multiple modalities.

- Masters degree in related field and a clinical background.
- Minimum of 5 years experience in a Hospital setting with a thorough understanding of hospital service delivery.
- Recent Surgical or Operative care experience an asset .
- At least 3 years experience in identifying, implementing and monitoring evidence-based, "best in class" patient safety initiatives within a health-care environment.
- Demonstrated presentation and report writing skills.
- At least 3 years experience in facilitating quality improvement teams,



applying quality improvement methods and tools and an ability to coach and mentor staff on the same.
- Understanding and demonstrated application of key concepts in patient safety like systems approach, systems design, human factors and high reliability organizations.
- Expert knowledge of the patient safety literature and completion of courses or workshops in quality and patient safety.
- Demonstrated skills in data collection design, collection of data and analysis.
- Demonstrated expertise and ability to apply, teach and mentor teams in the use of patient incident investigation tools such as root cause analysis (RCA) and failure modes effects analysis (FMEA).
- Proficiency in use of data bases (e. g. Access), statistical software packages (e.g. MiniTab, SPSS-PC) and quality tools software packages (e.g. Visio).
- Demonstrated proficiency in team building, presentation, project management, innovation, creativity and change management skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning through pursuit of educational endeavours.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain impartiality, objectivity, diplomacy and confidentiality.
- Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, communication and facilitation skills
- Demonstrated ability to effectively work in teams in balance with an ability to work independently and offer creative and cutting-edge solutions.
