ROLE
We are currently seeking a hands-on, tech savvy Payroll Specialist to join the downtown Calgary head office to support the Payroll team in carrying out the payroll activities of our growing business.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Accurate and timely full cycle employee and contractor payroll and expense processing and reporting.
- Ensure compliance with federal and provincial payroll, privacy legislation, organizational policies and procedures, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Timesheet tracking, auditing, and query resolution.
- Contractor invoice tracking, processing, and query resolution.
- Prepare payroll journal entries and post to the general ledger, including month end payroll and/or contractor accruals.
- Reconcile and analyze a variety of balance sheet and P&L; accounts.
- Collaborate with Finance on payroll analytical analyses, reconciliations, remittances and audit requirements.
- Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end financial close activities.
- Prepare government and 3rd party remittances, year-end/audit requirements, and other internal/external stakeholder payroll reports and remittances.
- Support year-end payroll activities, including T4s, W-2s, ROEs, or other jurisdiction-specific reporting requirements.
- Assist with time off tracking and prepare regular reports to managers or at employees’ request.
- Provide excellent user support for internal payroll systems and processes.
- Respond to and resolve employee pay queries and other ad hoc payroll related activities.
- Assist with payroll process improvements.
- Testing, implementation, documentation, and user support of new systems and upgrades.
- Identify opportunities to standardize and improve processes and procedures.
- Help develop employee training and documentation.
- Provide vacation coverage for payroll team members.
Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree, Business Administration diploma or equivalent with a major in accounting.
- A PCP designation or actively pursuing one.
Experience
- 2 – 5 years of experience in payroll and accounting.
Skills and Knowledge
- Knowledge of both Canadian and US payroll and employment standards and legislation.
- Ability to act with discretion when handling confidential information.
- Superior attention to detail and solid focus on accuracy.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across all levels of the organization.
- Excellent organizational, time management, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including advanced Excel skills for data analysis, reporting and reconciliation.
- Explorer Eclipse software experience considered an asset but not required.
- Self-motivated, results driven, and able to work well under time constraints.
- Strong desire to learn and grow within the company.
WORKING CONDITIONS This is a permanent position based at our Calgary office with a 5-day work week, 8-hour days.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The Payroll Specialist reports to the Payroll Manager.
