Pediatric Plastic Surgery at MCH includes consultative, operative and follow-up services for infants, children and adolescent patients. The patient population consists of large volume outpatient as well as inpatient surgical and non-surgical care of patients suffering from congenital and acquired disorders. The MCH Plastic Surgery team utilizes a multidisciplinary and cooperative team approach to patient care. The MCH Pediatric Plastic Surgeons specialize in the care of pediatric patients with congenital, developmental or acquired disorders and manage all aspects of pediatric trauma. All members of this group have had extensive fellowship training and many have undergone further training to become experts in hand surgery, craniofacial surgery, cleft lip & palate surgery, burn surgery, wound care, microsurgery, breast reconstruction, tumours and reconstruction, nerve surgery and reconstruction, vascular anomalies, and others.

The Plastic

Surgery service is also a major support to the level one pediatric trauma program.

The Physician Assistant will work under the direct supervision of the Pediatric Plastic Surgeons.

Assistant will play a major role in facilitating consistent application of clinical protocols and continuity of care, utilizing the principles of evidence based practice.

Assistant will work in partnership with Pediatric Plastic Surgeons, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education. This role will support the clinical activity, associated patient care and interventions of the Pediatric Plastic Surgery service.



This includes the Pediatric Plastic Surgery Clinic and may include the Emergency Department, Inpatient Units, Sedation room, and Operating Room. There are a number of subspecialty clinics involved with the Pediatric Plastic Surgery service including the burn clinic, vascular anomalies clinic, cleft lip & palate clinic, brachial plexus injury clinic, and the craniofacial clinic.

The Physician Assistant will provide a full range of physician assistant services, requesting consultation with appropriate physicians, clinicians, or other health care resources as indicated.

Assistant will order diagnostic tests as applicable, prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, and deliver procedural/surgical care where appropriate.

Assistant will participate in the education of other health professional trainees as appropriate, as well as research and academic pursuits as directed by the identified Physician Supervisor.

- Graduate of Physician Assistant Program

- Prior experience in the Plastic Surgery and/or Pediatric Acute Care settings an asset

- Minimum two (2) years’ experience in applying advanced Plastic Surgery knowledge, physical assessment skills, diagnostic interventions and self-care or caregiver-lead management skills for pediatric patients in an ambulatory setting

- Proficiency in performing history and examination of the infant, toddler, child and adolescent

- Knowledge and assessment of developmental milestones at all stages of pediatric development including the unique aspects of adolescent development

- Experience and ability to lead and facilitate the development and implementation of basic and advanced education programs for patients, families, staff, other health professionals

- Demonstrated ability to make decisions and perform well in critical high stress situations

- Demonstrated proficiency in working with peers and multidisciplinary healthcare teams, including Intensivists, Nurses and other health care professionals

- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills

- Demonstrated ability to promote professional development

- Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking skills

- Demonstrated commitment to patient and family-centered care

- Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem-solving, organization and prioritization

- Able to handle significant daily psychological and emotional stress in dealing with parents of critically or chronically ill children
