Position: Pipelayer
Department: Civil Construction
Reports To: Foreman / Site Supervisor
Employment Type: Full-Time / Seasonal
Position Summary The Pipelayer is responsible for the safe and efficient installation of underground civil infrastructure, including sanitary sewer, storm sewer, watermain, culverts, and related underground utilities. The Pipelayer works as part of a construction crew and is responsible for ensuring pipe is installed to the required line, grade, elevation, and specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Install sanitary sewer, storm sewer, watermain, culverts, and underground utilities.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and grade stakes.
- Set and maintain pipe to the required line and grade using lasers, levels, and other grade-control equipment.
- Prepare pipe bedding and ensure proper trench conditions prior to pipe installation.
- Assist with excavation, trench preparation, shoring, and dewatering activities.
- Inspect pipe, fittings, valves, manholes, and other materials before installation.
- Make proper pipe connections, joints, bends, and fittings according to project specifications.
- Ensure proper pipe alignment, elevations, slopes, and grades are maintained.
- Assist with installation of manholes, catch basins, valve boxes, hydrants, and other structures.
- Perform backfilling and compaction activities around installed utilities.
- Assist with pressure testing, leakage testing, CCTV preparation, flushing, and disinfection as required.
- Identify and report discrepancies in drawings, existing utilities, grades, or site conditions to the Foreman.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Operate small equipment and tools when qualified and authorized.
- Follow all company, project, and WorkSafeBC safety requirements.
- Participate in daily toolbox meetings and hazard assessments.
- Protect existing utilities and infrastructure during construction.
- Perform other general civil construction duties as directed by the Foreman or Project Manager.
Qualifications & Experience
- Previous experience as a pipelayer or civil construction labourer is preferred.
- Experience installing sanitary sewer, storm sewer, watermain, or underground utilities is an asset.
- Ability to read construction drawings and understand elevations and grades.
- Experience using pipe lasers, levels, and other grade-control equipment is an asset.
- Knowledge of proper pipe bedding, trenching, backfilling, and compaction practices.
- Ability to work safely around heavy equipment and in active construction zones.
- Valid driver's licence is an asset.
- First Aid, Ground Disturbance, or other relevant construction certifications are considered an asset.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment.
- Ability to work in trenches and confined construction areas.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel,
and climb throughout the workday.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Safety Responsibilities The Pipelayer is expected to actively contribute to a safe work environment by:
- Following all company safety policies and procedures.
- Wearing required PPE at all times.
- Participating in toolbox meetings and hazard assessments.
- Maintaining safe working distances from operating equipment.
- Following trenching, excavation, and confined-space requirements.
- Reporting unsafe conditions, incidents, near misses, and damaged equipment immediately.
- Never entering an unsafe or improperly protected excavation.

Pay: $30.00-$45.00 per hour
