Overview
This role supports the Ministry of Transportation as part of Serco Canada's Driver Examiner Services (DES) contract. Driver Examiners are based at DriveTest Centre locations and provide examination services, information, and customer care to applicants throughout the driver licensing process. The team conducts road tests, observes and assesses driving abilities, and documents results for road test assessments.
The position is contingent upon successful completion of background checks including a Criminal Record Check (CPIC); Fingerprint Criminal Record Check .
Summary / Purpose
- Evaluates the driving ability of applicants at the G2 and G level.
- Evaluates the driving ability of applicants at the M2, M and controlled class (ABZ) level, if qualified and required.
- Provides grade of road test, licence information and resolves licensing issues.
- Provides information and assistance related to Driver Examination services.
- Ensures fair and proper conduct of examinations in an environment that enables candidates to perform at their best.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides excellent customer service during the delivery of all Driver Examination Services.
- Responds to enquiries related to driver licensing, determines applicant status, provides information regarding test/re-test procedures and class of licence(s).
- Verifies candidate identity and basic information as part of the examination process.
- Examines applicants through road tests to determine abilities in vehicle mechanics and handling, noting compliance to traffic laws, stress responses, driving regulations and safe driving practices.
- Provides examination results and details regarding errors and areas requiring improvement.
- Completes evaluation forms for road test assessments and enters results into the system.
- Attends travel points to provide testing and licensing services where applicable.
- For M2, M and controlled class tests, observes and assesses riding habits, skills and ability to operate vehicles.
- Conducts road tests for applicants with special needs or disabilities.
- Complies with regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to operations including OH&S;, environmental, drug and alcohol, and quality.
- Adheres to Ministry and operational confidentiality requirements.
- Other related duties as required.

- Maintains a safe, healthy, and sustainable working environment at DriveTest Centres and travel points.
- Practices safety precautions and demonstrates correct use of equipment and protective devices as required.
- Stays informed on changes to legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Reports unsafe conditions and complies with OHSA duties and safety requirements.
Other / Projects
- Comply with Serco Canada Inc. policies and procedures.
- Performs other tasks as assigned by management, including special projects.
- Participates in obtaining required security measures and IDEC testing, Initial and maintenance training for road test examination qualified to conduct.
Job Requirements
Education / Certifications
- GED or high school diploma as a minimum
- Fluency in French and English
- Must hold a valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence
- Must have at least four years driving experience (based on date first licensed)
- Must hold a valid Class M and/or controlled class licence, if applicable
- No more than four demerit points and three violations at all times during employment as a Driver Examiner
Knowledge and Experience
- Knowledge of the DriveTest program and related legislation, regulations, government and company policies preferred
- Intermediate level computer skills
- Two years’ experience with demonstrated excellent customer service

- Excellent customer service skills and ability to handle difficult or complex situations
- Ability to multi-task and manage sensitive personal information
- Knowledge of Highway Traffic Act provisions and related policies
- Robust judgement, decision-making and self-management abilities
- Ability to observe driving behavior, assess performance and provide constructive feedback
Mental and Physical Effort
- Mental: Moderate to high intensity depending on activity
- Physical: Moderate intensity, up to several hours per day
Working Conditions
- Exposure to disagreeable elements and potential risks
- Variable hours based on customer demand and location
- Possible extended shifts, evenings, Saturdays and Sundays during peak periods
- Attendance at training sessions and on-the-job shadowing; unsuccessful training may end employment
