Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

- A Master’s degree in a mental health profession (e.g., Psychology, Social Work) or a related field is required.
- Membership of the Canadian Sports Psychological Association or relevant international equivalent is required.

EXPERIENCE:

- Experience working in sport psychology, performance psychology, or athlete mental performance environments is required.
- Familiarity with integrated sport science or athlete support teams is required.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Strong interpersonal and consultation skills are required.
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure performance environments is required.
- Knowledge of athlete development models and sport systems is required.
- Commitment to ethical practice, confidentiality and skilled standards is required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Non-traditional hours may be required, including evening and weekends, to align with training and competition schedules.
- Work conducted across multiple environments (e.g. training facilities competition venues, office etc.)
- Travel with teams may be required.

Key responsibilities

Sport & Performance Psychology Leadership

- Serve as the lead practitioner for sport and performance psychology within Bison Sports.
- Attend and actively contribute to weekly Bison Integrated Support Team (BIST) meetings.




- Collaborate with coaches and BIST members to integrate mental performance strategies into training and competition environments.
- Provide consultation to coaches regarding team culture, communication, leadership, motivation, and performance under pressure.
- Support athletes in developing skills related to focus, resilience, confidence, emotional regulation, and competition preparation.
- Assist student-athletes in managing the psychological aspects of injury recovery and return-to-play processes.
- Provide culturally responsive and inclusive services.
- Provide individual consultations and short-term services for varsity student-athletes experiencing personal, academic, athletic, or career concerns as appropriate.
- Conduct intake and triage services, referring student-athletes to appropriate campus or community resources when needed.
- Provide crisis intervention.

Education

- Meet with varsity teams and coaching staffs to identify mental performance and well-being needs at both the team and individual level.
- Develop, deliver, and/or coordinate workshops and educational sessions for student-athletes and coaches on topics such as:
- Mental performance skills
- Coping with injury
- Academic performance strategies
- Leadership and team culture
- Transition beyond varsity athletics
- Deliver presentation during Bison Athlete Orientation Week, outlining the role of performance psychology within the Integrated Support Team.

Integrated Support Team Collaboration

- Work collaboratively with members of the Bison Integrated Support Team, including:
- Strength and Conditioning staff
- Athletic Therapists
- Sports Nutritionists
- Academic advisors
- Coaching staff
- Contribute to a holistic athlete support model that integrates physical, mental, and academic performance.




- May include possible supervision of sport psychology students as appropriate.

Administration and Record Keeping

- Maintain appropriate and confidential clinical and consultation records in accordance with university policies and professional ethical standards.
- Participate in program evaluation and reporting related to student-athlete mental health and performance support services.
- Other related duties as required or assigned.

Additional information

The Performance Psychology Lead for Bison Sports provides specialized psychological support to varsity student-athletes and coaches within the Bison Integrated Support Team (BIST). The role is focused on enhancing athletic performance, mental resilience, and holistic student-athlete well-being. Working as a key member of the Bison Integrated Support Team (BIST), the Performance Psychology Lead collaborates with coaches, strength and conditioning staff, athletic therapists, and sports nutrition professionals to integrate mental performance strategies into the daily training and competitive environment of Bison varsity teams
