JOB SUMMARY: The Greenhouse Grower/Operator reports to the Manager of Allied Health Services, Department of Wellbeing.

The role of the Greenhouse Grower/Operator is to support plant growth and crop production in a controlled greenhouse environment while ensuring efficient, high-quality and sustainable growing practices. This includes planting, irrigation, fertilization, pest scouting, environmental monitoring, harvesting, and equipment maintenance; completing daily operational checks; and adhering to sanitation, quality assurance, and safety protocols to maintain optimal year-round conditions. The role also supports the integration of Haudenosaunee food knowledge into greenhouse planning and programming.

Full Time Contract (1 year)

Closing Date: August 26, 2026

Hours of Work: 35hrs/week

Wage: $63,200/annually

*A competitive compensation package will be offered commensurate with qualifications.*

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate of a diploma program in Greenhouse Technician, Horticulture Technician or related field

2-3 years demonstrated experience operating a greenhouse

Must possess a Greenhouse Structural Exterminator’s License

Familiarity with Haudenosaunee food and food ways

Must possess a valid ‘G’ class license and a vehicle

High level of computer skills – Microsoft Office, MS Word & Excel

POSITION TITLE: Greenhouse Grower/Operator REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to and receives direct supervision from the Manager of Allied Health, Department of Well-Being, and Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council.

PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION: The role of the Greenhouse Grower/Operator is to support plant growth and crop production in a controlled greenhouse environment while ensuring efficient, high-quality and sustainable growing practices. This includes planting, irrigation, fertilization, pest scouting, environmental monitoring, harvesting, and equipment maintenance; completing daily operational checks; and adhering to sanitation, quality assurance, and safety protocols to maintain optimal year-round conditions. The role also supports the integration of Haudenosaunee food knowledge into greenhouse planning and programming.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

TECHNICAL FUNCTIONS:

Greenhouse Operations

Establish, monitor, and adjust environmental conditions to optimize crop production

Operate and maintain irrigation, fertilization and climate control systems

Perform crop planting, propagating, transplanting, pruning and general crop care activities, incorporating Haudenosaunee food knowledge into planting plans and crop selection.

Monitor and test soil, growing media, water quality and nutrient levels

Maintain greenhouse machinery and tools





Complete daily environmental data recording

Harvest, label, package, refrigerate, and prepare crops for distribution, sale, or program use in accordance with quality standards

Track crop growth, yields, and production; maintain accurate greenhouse records and documentation to support operational planning and reporting

Monitor crop health and identify production issues, implementing corrective actions a required.

Implement integrated pest management practices and disease prevention and control measures.

Equipment and Facility Maintenance

Inspect and maintain greenhouse equipment, machinery, tools, and infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient operation

Coordinate routine greenhouse maintenance and activities with greenhouse support staff.

Complete end-of day walkthroughs, final sanitation checks, tools disinfection, climate control setting checks, equipment storage

Order and maintain inventories of supplies, materials, growing media, fertilizers, and equipment.

Adhere to established health and safety policies, infection prevention and control procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Ensure safe handling, storage and application of fertilizers, pesticides and other greenhouse materials.

Operate automated climate control systems and perform manual environmental adjustments to maintain appropriate internal temperature and growing conditions

Support and Program Collaboration

Assist with training staff, students, volunteers, and program participants in greenhouse operations, safety and best practices

Collaborate with greenhouse support staff to ensure efficient daily operations.

Support the planning, integration and ongoing operation of greenhouse-based activities within the Department of Well-Being programs and other educational and community initiatives.

Support quality assurance by ensuring harvested produce meets grading, labelling, and storage standards

COMMUNICATIONS FUNCTIONS:

Attends regular staff meetings with the Health Promotion team

Employs appropriate communication skills when interacting with participants, families and other staff

Follows procedures for reporting hazardous conditions, equipment and incidents

Ensures privacy is maintained in accordance with relevant regulations

Communicates regularly with the Manager of Allied Health

ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS:

Planning weekly itinerary and completing monthly work reports and statistics

Maintain daily operational checklists

Follow established reporting procedures as laid out by the program

Complete necessary monthly report forms and ensure relevant statistics are maintained as required





Review policy and procedure manual, work plans and job descriptions annually

Coordinate and schedule greenhouse events, programs and activities

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

Other duties as assigned or deemed necessary as it relates to the position.

Provides support to the Six Nations Emergency Measures Plan by ensuring awareness of the Emergency measures Plan and assistance as instructed by the Director of Well-Being

It is the responsibility of the employee to be aware of and adhere to all policies and procedures, including those that relate to client safety, staff safety and risk management.

Assists in implementing, coordinating and leading projects and initiatives taken on by Six Nations Department of Well-Being, as necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work may at times be subject to unscheduled hours

Work takes place primarily in a greenhouse workplace with exposure to heat, humidity, temperature fluctuations.

Work requires frequent bending, lifting, reaching, standing and walking for extended periods of time.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: With the Manager of Allied Health

Receives direction, guidance, encouragement; discusses plans and priorities.

With Other Staff

Promotes courtesy, co-operation and teamwork with all staff.

Represents and promotes Six Nations interests relative to the Department of Well-Being; maintains awareness of legislative policy and program changes; seeks to develop close working relationships.

Represents and promotes the health services interests of Six Nations; works in a courteous, co-operative positive and proactive manner, provides information and advice.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

IMPACT OF ERROR: Errors in judgement and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss credibility, poor public relations, confusion, duplication of effort and misinformation being given to the Director of Well-Being, Well-Being Committee, Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council, Government Agencies and the public.

CONTROL: Guiding principles set by the Department of Well-Being and Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council. Works within the administrative policies and procedures established by the Six Nations of the Grand River for the Department of Well-Being and other legislation provided by the respective governments.
