About the Position
Forest View Industries Ltd. is seeking a hands-on Purchasing & Logistics Manager to take ownership of purchasing, supplier coordination, inventory flow, shipping/receiving, and customer/jobsite deliveries.
We supply premium interior doors, architectural hardware, wood mouldings and related products to custom home builders, contractors, designers and homeowners throughout the GTA.
This is a key position within our operation. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the right materials are purchased at the right cost, arrive when required, and flow efficiently through our facility to our customers and jobsites.
We are looking for someone who combines strong purchasing and negotiation skills with practical logistics experience. This is not a desk-only purchasing position. You will work closely with our Production, Estimating, Sales, warehouse and delivery teams and will be expected to take ownership of issues through to resolution.
Key ResponsibilitiesPurchasing & Supplier Management
- Manage day-to-day purchasing of materials, hardware and supplies.
- Prepare and issue purchase orders accurately and on time.
- Monitor supplier pricing, lead times, availability and backorders.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and vendors.
- Negotiate pricing, freight, terms and other purchasing conditions.
- Source alternative suppliers and products when appropriate.
- Identify opportunities to consolidate purchasing and reduce costs.
- Verify supplier confirmations against purchase orders and resolve discrepancies.
- Follow up proactively on late or incomplete orders before they affect production or customers.
- Work with Estimating and Production to anticipate upcoming material requirements.
- Evaluate supplier performance based on pricing, quality, service and reliability.
Inventory & Material Control
- Maintain visibility of incoming materials, inventory requirements and shortages.
- Help establish and maintain appropriate inventory and reorder levels.
- Ensure received material is accurately identified and allocated.
- Investigate inventory discrepancies and implement corrective measures.
- Identify slow-moving, obsolete or excess inventory and recommend solutions.
- Work closely with Production to ensure required materials are available when needed.
Shipping, Receiving & Logistics
- Oversee the efficient flow of incoming and outgoing materials.
- Coordinate shipping and receiving priorities.
- Ensure customer orders are complete and accurate before they leave our facility.
- Coordinate customer pickups and deliveries to homes, construction sites and other locations.
- Schedule and coordinate our driver and delivery requirements.
- Communicate delivery requirements, special instructions and jobsite considerations clearly.
- Ensure shipping, receiving and delivery documentation is complete and accurate.
- Resolve shortages, damaged material, incorrect shipments and other logistical issues.
- Coordinate with Production regarding order completion and shipping requirements.
Leadership & Accountability
- Provide direction and priorities to employees involved in shipping, receiving and deliveries.
- Establish clear procedures and accountability within the purchasing and logistics functions.
- Work collaboratively with our Production Manager, Estimating and Sales teams.
- Identify recurring problems and implement practical process improvements.
- Maintain an organized, safe and effective shipping/receiving area.
- Take ownership of problems rather than allowing issues to move between departments unresolved.
- Help develop systems and procedures that improve accuracy, efficiency and customer service.
What We're Looking For The ideal candidate will have several years of experience in purchasing, procurement, logistics, shipping/receiving, inventory management or a related position, preferably within construction, building materials, manufacturing, millwork, hardware, metal products or another technical product environment. You should be someone who is equally comfortable negotiating with a supplier, reviewing a purchase order, investigating an inventory discrepancy, and walking into the warehouse to determine why an order isn't ready to ship.
Qualifications & Skills
- Purchasing, procurement or supplier-management experience.
- Strong negotiation and vendor-management skills.
- Experience coordinating shipping, receiving, deliveries and/or inventory.
- Excellent organizational and follow-up skills.
- Robust attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and changing deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making ability.
- Comfortable working in both an office and warehouse/manufacturing environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Good computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook and Excel.
- Experience with ERP, inventory, purchasing or order-management software is an asset.
- Experience reading drawings, specifications, measurements or technical product information is an asset.
- Construction, building-material, architectural-hardware, millwork, metal or manufacturing experience is an asset.
- Previous supervisory or management experience is an asset.
- Forklift experience or certification is an asset; training can be provided for the right candidate.
- Valid driver's licence is an asset.
The Person We're Looking For This position will suit someone who takes personal ownership and accountability for their area of the business.
You notice problems before they become emergencies. If material is going to be late, you find out why and determine the options. If an order doesn't look right, you investigate it. If a supplier's pricing has become uncompetitive, you look for alternatives.
We are particularly interested in someone who sees purchasing as more than simply issuing purchase orders. We want someone who will continually look for opportunities to improve supplier relationships, negotiate better value, reduce unnecessary costs and improve the flow of materials through the company.
At the same time, purchasing decisions must consider quality, specifications, lead times and supplier reliability — not simply the lowest price.
Compensation
Competitive base salary based on experience.
In addition to base compensation, Forest View Industries is developing a performance incentive tied to measurable purchasing improvements and verified cost savings.
This provides an opportunity for a strong Purchasing & Logistics Manager to increase their overall compensation by generating measurable value for the company.
Why Join Forest View Industries?
This is an opportunity to take meaningful ownership of an important part of our business.
You will have the ability to influence how we purchase materials, work with suppliers, manage inventory and coordinate the movement of products through our operation.
For the right person, this position offers the opportunity to build and improve systems rather than simply inherit them, while becoming an important part of the company's management team.
