Job#: 3046681 : SAS VIYA Consultant Industry: Financial Services
Location: Toronto. Hybrid: 2 days a week
Duration of Contract/Perm: 5 Month contract with potential to extend
Hours/week: 37.5 per week Rate Range: $48-53 T4 Start date: September 2026
Job Overview Apex Systems is seeking a SAS Consultant to join a leading financial services organization in Toronto. Reporting to the Senior Product Manager, this role serves as a bridge between legacy SAS platforms, SAS Viya, and Databricks, supporting business users across the SAS ecosystem and enabling the migration of analytics workloads to modern cloud-based platforms.
The environment build is nearly complete, so the consultant will focus on engaging business users to understand their use cases, gather and document requirements, and support the transition from SAS 9.4 on-prem to SAS Viya and Databricks with minimal disruption. This is a functional, consultative role rather than a development role, so a strong functional understanding of the SAS environment is essential, but hands-on SAS or Kubernetes development is not expected.
Responsibilities SAS Platform Ownership and Migration Support
- Act as a SAS subject matter expert and platform owner for SAS 9.4 and SAS Viya, serving as a center of excellence for enterprise analytics users
- Support users through the end-to-end migration lifecycle from SAS on-prem to SAS Viya and from SAS-based workloads to Databricks, including assessment, planning, execution support, onboarding, and post-migration stabilization
- Assess existing SAS workloads, understand business use cases, and help recommend the appropriate modernization path, whether a workload moves to SAS Viya, Databricks, or another approved platform pattern
- Provide functional guidance on Databricks capabilities so business users understand how it can support analytics, data engineering, data science, AI/ML, and self-service data access needs
- Understand the underlying infrastructure at a functional level, including Azure Kubernetes (AKS) components, single sign-on, and network connectivity and bandwidth, and direct issues to the appropriate platform, technology, and vendor teams
Requirements Gathering And User Enablement
- Lead discovery and requirements gathering sessions with business partners to understand current SAS usage, reporting needs, data dependencies, controls, and future-state analytics requirements
- Support COE documentation, including business requirement gathering, user guides, and demos
- Develop migration plans, onboarding approaches, user enablement material, training,
and adoption roadmaps to support the transition from legacy SAS platforms to cloud analytics platforms
- Provide training, coaching, and consultative support to help users adopt SAS Viya and Databricks effectively
- Identify and manage migration risks, issues, dependencies, and business impacts to ensure timely execution and minimal disruption to business operations
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Act as the connector between SAS users, Databricks platform teams, architecture, engineering, governance, information security, risk management, vendors, and other internal partners
- Help the enablement team secure alignment and buy-in with other business teams, translating requirements into practical platform solutions across SAS Viya and Databricks
- Promote platform standardization, governance, reusable patterns, and best practices across SAS, SAS Viya, and Databricks environments
Qualifications
- 7 to 10 years of relevant experience supporting enterprise analytics platforms
- Strong, thorough functional understanding of the SAS environment, including SAS 9.4 architecture, administration, and programming concepts, with SAS Viya exposure preferred but not required
- Demonstrated experience helping users migrate analytics workloads from legacy SAS environments to modern cloud platforms, including SAS Viya and Databricks
- Databricks experience, ideally on Azure, with a functional understanding of data engineering, analytics, data science, machine learning, notebooks, jobs, clusters, catalogs, and self-service data access patterns
- Strong business analysis and consulting skills to gather, document, interpret, and translate business, reporting, analytical, data, and operational requirements into platform solutions
- Strong written and verbal communication and documentation skills sufficient to convey information to business users, technical teams, and executives, and to secure buy-in
- Experience developing migration roadmaps, onboarding plans, training material, and stakeholder communications
- Ability to act as an owner, adapt quickly, take initiative, and provide practical guidance to users operating across SAS, SAS Viya, and Databricks
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Candidates who have personally transitioned from SAS to Databricks or another modern platform
- Functional awareness of Azure Kubernetes (AKS) and network connectivity considerations, without a requirement to develop or administer Kubernetes
- Background in the financial services industry
