The Security Guard 2 provides advanced security services to ensure the safety and security of patients, staff, visitors, and property in a secure healthcare environment. The role involves access control, surveillance, patient escorts, emergency response, incident investigation, and enforcement of safety and security procedures while maintaining a calm, professional, and service-oriented approach.
Key Responsibilities
Access Control & Surveillance
- Monitor and control the movement of patients, staff, and visitors within secure areas
- Provide interior and perimeter security through observation, patrols, and documentation
- Maintain key control and personal alarm systems
- Conduct routine and situational security checks of unit perimeters and safety equipment
Patient & Client Escort Services
- Escort patients to appointments and off-unit activities, including external locations
- Ensure safety and security during escorts while maintaining professionalism and dignity
Search, Screening & Incident Response
- Conduct patient and area searches for safety, security screening, or investigations
- Respond to emergencies calmly and effectively
- Assist with incident investigations and complete required reports
- Remove unauthorized persons and liaise with emergency responders when required
Safety, Emergency & Security Operations
- Patrol buildings and grounds to deter and detect security risks
- Enforce safety and security procedures to protect life and property
- Apply emergency response, fire safety, and crisis intervention procedures
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete accurate and timely security reports and documentation
- Maintain clear communication with staff, patients, visitors, and team members
Professional Practice & Team Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with security staff and interdisciplinary teams
- Exercise sound judgment, problem-solving, and independent decision-making
- Demonstrate professionalism, tact, and sensitivity when working with individuals experiencing mental health and addiction challenges
- Support a respectful, inclusive, and service-oriented workplace
- Comply with all applicable legislative, regulatory, and organizational requirements
Shift & Work Requirements
- Work rotating shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and extended tours
- Meet minimum availability requirements
Responsibilities
Qualifications
- Valid Security Guard licence under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act (PSISA)
- Completion of, or active enrollment in, a two-year Community College Law Enforcement program
- Minimum 6 months to 1 year of security experience
- Current First Aid and CPR certification
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public, staff, and patients
- Sensitivity when working with individuals experiencing mental health and addiction challenges
- Ability to remain calm during emergencies
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, Outlook)
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the role
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Availability to work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays
Nice to Haves
- Experience in a healthcare or inpatient setting
- Knowledge of fire and emergency response procedures
- WHMIS certification
- Training in non-violent crisis intervention techniques
- Experience liaising with emergency responders
- Bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in a second language
