The Lands & Regulatory Department (LRD) operates in a complex, high‑stakes regulatory and consultation environment involving federal and provincial governments, industry proponents, and regional Indigenous partners. FCMN is seeking a Senior Specialist to provide senior‑level expertise, strategic support within the LRD. Position Summary
Fort Chipewyan Métis Nation (FCMN) is seeking one (1) Senior Lands & Regulatory Advisor to provide senior‑level policy, regulatory, and technical support to the Lands & Regulatory Director and LRD team.
This role is designed to strengthen internal capacity, support continuity on high‑risk files, and assist the Director and team in managing workload and institutional knowledge across the department. The Advisor provides senior analysis, review, and coordination support on LRD files and priorities.
This position supports — but does not replace — the strategic leadership, decision‑making authority, or negotiation role of the Lands & Regulatory Director. Metis experience an asset.
Position Details

- Location: Flexible within Alberta, preferably in Northern Alberta; travel to Fort Chipewyan and Fort McMurray required
- Reporting To: Lands & Regulatory Director
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the Lands & Regulatory Director and LRD team in advancing regulatory, consultation, and environmental files, including coordination, follow‑through, and issue tracking.
- Provide senior‑level analysis, review, and advice to support decision‑making on high‑risk or technical files.
- Assist with preparation of briefing materials, background analysis, position summaries, and decision‑ready information for leadership discussions.
- Support Director‑led negotiations and engagement with government and industry through preparation, participation, and follow‑up, as directed.
- 0Work with FCMN technical team and subject matter experts to flag key issues, risks or gaps affecting FCMN interests related to regulatory submissions, technical reports and requests for consultation and engagement and provide advice for FCMN specific follow-up
- Translate nuanced technical, regulatory, or policy information into clear summaries for leadership, staff, and reporting purposes.
- Support coordination and continuity of departmental files during periods of peak workload, transition, or temporary staff absence.
- Provide advice and practical support to LRD staff working on complex files, without assuming supervisory or management authority.
- Contribute to development and refinement of internal tools, templates, and approaches that strengthen consistency and institutional knowledge.
- Support tracking of deliverables, timelines, and reporting obligations related to regulatory work, funding agreements, and projects.
- Assist with funding applications, reporting,
and documentation related to regulatory participation, studies, or engagement activities.
- Contribute to LRD reporting materials, including board briefings, internal updates, and external communications, as required.
Qualifications & Experience · Post‑secondary education in Indigenous Studies, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, Policy, or related field; equivalent experience will be considered.
· Significant experience working in Indigenous regulatory, consultation, environmental, or land‑use contexts.
· Experience working with federal and provincial regulators and industry proponents.
· Ability to review, interpret, and summarize technical and regulatory information.
· Strong analytical, organizational, and written communication skills.
· Ability to work independently with a high degree of professionalism, sound judgment, and confidentiality.
· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work respectfully with leadership, staff, Elders, members, and external partners.
· Demonstrated cultural competency and commitment to Métis rights and governance.
Other Requirements:
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
- Willingness to travel regularly to Fort Chipewyan and Fort McMurray.
