Company Overview

ONEC Engineering Inc. is a dynamic engineering services firm with over 20 years of experience delivering comprehensive engineering, project management, and procurement solutions. We provide multidisciplinary services tailored to meet our clients’ needs, from engineering design and project planning through procurement and project execution, all under one integrated team.

Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced, and self-directed Senior Mechanical Piping Designer with strong industrial experience in piping design, 2D/3D CAD modelling, isometrics, P&IDs;, MTOs, plot plans, equipment layouts, and construction support. We are looking for a true designer, not simply a CAD operator who can understand design intent, identify issues and clashes proactively, develop practical solutions, and take ownership of their work from concept through construction. The successful candidate should be curious, adaptable, committed to continuous learning, and comfortable adopting new software, technologies, and project delivery workflows.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership within a multidisciplinary team and support the delivery of high quality mechanical and piping design projects while meeting project specific and client specific design, CAD/BIM, data, and document control requirements.

Responsibilities

- Lead mechanical and piping design activities while meeting project budgets, schedules, quality requirements, and deliverables.
- Develop and review piping layouts, equipment arrangements, isometrics, P&IDs;, MTOs, 3D models, plot plans, and construction drawings with minimal oversight.
- Interpret P&IDs;, equipment information, process requirements, vendor drawings, specifications, and engineering direction and translate them into practical, constructable piping designs.
- Proactively identify design conflicts, clashes, constructability concerns, incomplete information, and potential field issues, and work with the project team to develop practical solutions before they affect construction.
- Apply sound piping design principles, including equipment accessibility, maintenance requirements, operability, piping routing, support considerations, valve accessibility, tie-ins, installation sequencing, and safe access.
- Work with AutoCAD, Plant 3D, Navisworks, and other project-specific design and coordination platforms. Experience with Inventor, MicroStation, SolidWorks, CADWorx, Revit, and/or Revizto is an asset.
- Be willing and able to learn current design technologies, software, and workflows, including BIM and model based project delivery, as required by the company and its clients.
- Understand how information moves between design platforms and disciplines and adapt software workflows to meet client specific CAD, BIM, modelling, data, and deliverable requirements.
- Work within ONEC’s or client specific CAD/BIM standards, file structures, naming conventions, model-sharing environments, and document control workflows.
- Conduct site visits, equipment walkdowns, field verification, constructability reviews, and interference checks, as required.
- Review existing facilities and field conditions and incorporate accurate field information into brownfield designs and models.
- Establish and maintain CAD standards,

templates, and design workflows to improve consistency, quality, and efficiency.
- Establish and maintain Plant 3D catalogues, piping specifications, project configurations, templates, and associated project database information.
- Perform model coordination and interdisciplinary clash reviews using tools such as Navisworks, Revizto or other appropriate software and take an active role in resolving identified conflicts.
- Communicate and coordinate effectively with engineering disciplines, project managers, clients, vendors, construction personnel, and other project team members.
- Support client communication and provide technical input on mechanical and piping design matters.
- Ask appropriate technical questions, recognize when information is missing or inconsistent, and independently follow issues through to resolution.
- Take ownership of assigned design packages and manage priorities with limited supervision while keeping the project team informed of issues that may affect scope, schedule, cost, or quality.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, client specifications, and project requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers and other project team members.
- Support the development of other designers by sharing design knowledge, software expertise, efficient workflows, and lessons learned.
- Continuously look for opportunities to improve design quality, modelling practices, workflows, templates, and overall project delivery efficiency.

Skills

- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, MicroStation, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, and Pro/ENGINEER for detailed design work.
- Strong mechanical knowledge with a solid understanding of piping systems, schematics, and system design principles.
- Experience in drafting technical drawings for mechanical systems with attention to accuracy and clarity.
- Familiarity with Bluebeam for document review and NavisWorks for clash detection and coordination.
- Construction experience related to piping installation or mechanical system assembly is highly desirable.
- Ability to interpret mechanical engineering concepts into precise CAD models and drawings.
- Knowledge of 2D animation tools for visualizing complex piping systems is a plus.

Ideal Candidate

- 10+ years of industrial mechanical/piping design experience.
- Diploma or certificate in engineering design and drafting technology, mechanical engineering technology, or a related discipline.
- Strong experience in industrial, oil & gas, chemical, agricultural, energy, power, or similar industrial projects.
- Strong piping layout and equipment arrangement skills with demonstrated ability to develop designs from engineering information rather than simply reproduce markups.
- Knowledge of piping systems, rotating equipment, material handling systems, vessels,

and industrial process systems and their impact on mechanical and piping design.
- Working knowledge of applicable Canadian and industry codes and standards relevant to piping and mechanical design, which may include ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII, CSA B51, applicable CSA B149 requirements, API standards, and Alberta regulatory requirements. Experience working on systems governed by CSA B52, CSA B139, and/or CSA Z662 is an asset.
- Solid understanding of construction practices, constructability, equipment access and maintenance requirements, piping installation practices, and multidisciplinary project delivery.
- Experience working on brownfield facilities where existing drawings, models, or facility information may be incomplete or require field verification is considered an asset.
- Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently, lead design activities, and develop templates and standards for the design team.
- Highly motivated, accountable, and self-directed, with a demonstrated willingness to take initiative rather than wait for detailed instructions.
- A continuous-learning mindset and genuine interest in expanding technical knowledge, software capabilities, and understanding of other engineering disciplines.
- Comfortable learning unfamiliar software and independently developing an understanding of how different platforms can be used together to satisfy project and client workflows.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to recognize inconsistencies, design risks, clashes, and potential construction issues before they become field problems.
- Able to balance design quality, constructability, project schedule, and budget when developing solutions.
- Experience with BIM, model coordination, common data environments, or other digital project delivery workflows is considered an asset.
- Experience designing plumbing and sewage systems is an asset.
- Experience working on commercial mechanical projects is an asset.

The Type of Person We Are Looking For: Beyond technical experience, we are looking for someone who takes ownership of their work and wants to continue developing throughout their career. The right candidate will be proactive, dependable, resourceful, and willing to work through unfamiliar problems rather than wait for detailed direction. We value designers who ask questions, challenge designs when something does not look right, identify potential problems before they reach the field, and work collaboratively with engineers and other disciplines to develop practical solutions.

The successful candidate should have a genuine interest in learning new technologies and expanding their capabilities. As project delivery methods continue to evolve, they must be willing to learn new software and workflows including BIM and other digital design platforms, and understand how to use these tools effectively to meet the requirements of different clients and projects. Ultimately, we are looking for someone who wants to design, solve problems, continuously improve, and contribute to building a stronger design team.

Join us to bring your expertise to impactful projects where your designs will shape efficient mechanical systems!
