The Executive Council plays a vital role in shaping Alberta’s strategic direction and enabling effective government decision making. Within this environment, the Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) branch supports Alberta’s leadership and participation in Canada’s federation.

As part of the Federal-Provincial team, you will contribute to advancing Alberta’s interests, strengthening relationships across governments, and helping shape public policy that impacts Albertans every day.

Are you passionate about public policy, federalism, and the dynamics of Canada’s intergovernmental landscape? Do you enjoy research, analysis, collaboration, and keeping your finger on the pulse of emerging political and social policy issues?

As an Intergovernmental Officer, you will play a key role in supporting Alberta’s participation in intergovernmental initiatives, informing senior officials, and helping the province anticipate and respond to developments across the Canadian federation.

Your work will inform strategic decision making at the highest levels—and contribute directly to advancing Alberta’s interests in key social policy areas.

Intergovernmental Monitoring & Analysis

- Monitor media, government announcements, legislative developments, and political trends across Canada to identify emerging intergovernmental issues related to social policy.
- Distill trends and identify implications for Alberta.




- Share timely updates with colleagues across the Federal-Provincial team and broader IGR section.

Support to Senior Officials

- Prepare briefing notes, memos, speaking notes, tables, summaries, and other communications for senior leadership.
- Review intergovernmental agreements to assess alignment with Alberta’s priorities and ensure appropriate documentation.

Participation in Intergovernmental Processes

- Assist with coordination of Alberta’s participation in key forums such as the Council of the Federation, Western Premiers’ Conference, First Ministers’ Meetings, and other bilateral or multilateral intergovernmental engagements.
- Develop issue updates, briefing materials, and speaking notes.
- Liaise with other governments and Alberta ministries to support meeting preparation and follow up.

Policy Research & Development

- Conduct multidisciplinary research and analysis supporting Alberta’s policy positions in social policy.
- Track academic developments, sector trends, and policy innovations across Canada.
- Summarize key materials and provide insights that support informed decision making.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standards

- University graduation in a relevant field such as Political Science, Canadian Studies, Law, Public Administration, Public Policy, or a related field, plus a minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible experience in:
- Intergovernmental relations
- Public policy research and analysis
- Legislative or governmental process work, or
- Strategic policy development; or equivalent as described below.

Equivalency

- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Hours of Work: Monday-Friday, 8:15am - 4:30pm, 36.25 hours/week

Location: Commerce Place Building, Downtown Edmonton

Final candidates may be required to undergo a security screening.
