King’s Church Durham is an evangelical and charismatic community church serving the city of Durham. Over 30 years the Lord has steadily grown a city-wide ministry at Kings with a congregation comprising diverse ethnicities, ages and backgrounds. Kings has a growing ministry with families, young people, ethnic minorities and a large student ministry in the context of Durham University with its international academic reputation, especially in theology.
We are excited about the potential of Kings to contribute to the work of the gospel, the church and the kingdom of God in this strategic North East centre and across our region. For further information about the church, its context and its ministry visit see the church profile here.
We are seeking to appoint a minister to add to our current Senior Staff Team of three: Mark Bonnington (Senior Minister) Katherine Jacklin (Pastoral Co-ordinator) and Chris Morgan (Operations Manager).
The post is for three to five years in the first instance. Our hope is that the appointee’s ministry and contribution to church life would move over this period on a trajectory where they could take greater responsibility within Kings.
This post is intended to strengthen the Senior Staff Team and its contribution to developing the life of King’s Church over the next 5-10+ years.
You Will
- Grow into a significant role in the life of the church including preaching, leading, overseeing worship and contributing to advancing the pastoral and missional life of the church.
- Have a strong interest in theology,
teaching and training appropriate for ministry in a context with a large student ministry, considerable missional opportunities, and with long established training programmes. You will contribute to the long-standing reputation of Kings for serious engagement with the preaching and teaching of Scripture and theology in order to see future generations raised up for leadership in the church.
- Most likely have a higher degree in Theology or a closely related discipline and/or be open to further postgraduate study in order to deepen and enrich your ministry.
- Be in full sympathy with our vision and values and comfortable working within the Ichthus Link fellowship of churches.
- Bring both your own passions and perspectives and have the maturity and flexibility to offer these within our existing values and structures.
Skills As this is a new post, the precise distribution of roles and activities will depend on the experience, gifts, skills and passions of the current appointee within the framework of the overall vision and values of the church, but you will:
- Participate regularly and fully in the life and activities of our staff team of a dozen and trainee team of 4-6, including worship, prayer, and study together.
- Participate in the life of the church as a whole by attending Sunday worship and being part of a cell group for discipleship and community.
- Work, alongside the Oversight and Senior Staff Teams, in overseeing the ministry of the church and supporting the other staff in their service and leadership.
- Be a person with faith deeply rooted in Scripture, alive to the work of the Spirit, committed to mission and passionate about the development of the faith of disciples of all ages and stages. It will help if you love the North, but Durham is an easy place to love anyway!
Remuneration: Negotiable but package £40,000+ in line with considerations such as experience, qualifications and responsibility. Starting date: a mutually agreed date from Autumn 2026 or early 2027
This post requires an enhanced DBS check.
Needless to say, this is a post for which it is a genuine occupational requirement that the post holder be an active evangelical Christian believer.
At this point we are inviting expressions of interest and conversations with suitably experienced and qualified candidates, who will be offered the opportunity to visit Kings as part of a shared discernment process. A more detailed statement of King’s Church Durham’s values and commitments is available for discussion as part of the appointment process.
In the first instance please contact Mark Bonnington, Senior Minister, including your phone contact details, and an outline of your interest and he will be glad to talk with you about the post (
[email protected]).
