Company Description
Passive Earth Inc. makes Tree Guardian, a subsurface irrigation system that keeps newly planted urban trees watered for 10-14 days per fill. We're in pilot deployments with municipal and academic partners in Vancouver and Kelowna.
Role Description
We need a soft goods designer to recreate the tech pack for our tree bag water reservoir — a PVC-coated fabric bag, currently in second-stage manufacturing — with revisions implemented to hold more water and stand taller under its own fill. This is a physics and pattern problem: getting more volume into a stable, self-supporting shape without the walls collapsing or bulging.
You'll take the existing design, work through the construction changes needed to hit the recent volume and stand height, and produce a complete revised tech pack — pattern, dimensions, and spec drawings — ready for manufacturing. I handle manufacturer communications directly, so you'll be working from samples and test results rather than managing that relationship yourself.
This is a contract role,
hybrid in Vancouver, working closely with the founder. Position starts as soon as possible.
Qualifications
- Experience with soft goods or industrial design for coated fabric or flexible containers — pattern-making through production-ready tech packs
- Background in water bladders, oil/water containment, or similar liquid-holding flexible structures
- Hands-on PVC welding experience, or close working knowledge of RF-welded or heat-sealed seam construction
- Understands how fabric grain, seam placement, and internal pressure affect the shape and stability of a filled flexible container
- Comfortable with CAD and technical drawings a factory can build from
- Can run a physical fill test, read how the bag holds shape and volume, and fix it in the pattern
- Comfortable in a small startup — few handoffs, fast iteration, direct founder contact
