Job#: 3045725 : Sr Database Engineer (PostgreSQL)

Contract Mississauga We are seeking a senior-level Application Developer / PostgreSQL Database Engineer to help build the next generation of a self-service analytics and portfolio management platform. While the team has an existing R Shiny web application, the primary focus of this role is designing and developing the underlying PostgreSQL data platform that will serve as the long-term source of truth for project and portfolio reporting.

The ideal candidate will come from a Data Engineering, Database Engineering, or Backend Engineering background and have experience designing scalable relational databases, building data models, and supporting data-driven applications. This individual will play a key role in establishing historical data tracking, improving data lineage, and creating a structured, scalable foundation for analytics.

Experience with web application development, particularly R Shiny, is preferred but secondary to strong database and data architecture expertise.

Responsibilities

- Design and develop a PostgreSQL database to serve as the centralized source of truth for portfolio and project management data.
- Create and maintain logical and physical data models, including table structures, relationships, and schema design.
- Design indexing strategies and optimize database performance for reporting and application workloads.
- Develop solutions to support historical data retention, daily snapshots, and long-term trend analysis.
- Establish data lineage and governance practices to improve visibility and trust in reporting data.
- Partner with stakeholders to understand reporting and application requirements and translate them into scalable database solutions.
- Design and support the application's data access layer.
- Serve as a secondary resource for the team's R Shiny web application to reduce single points of failure.
- Collaborate with application developers to ensure productive integration between the application and database.
- Support enhancements to existing web-based analytics solutions and self-service reporting capabilities.
- Contribute to application deployment, monitoring, and support activities as needed.
- Implement development best practices including version control, testing,



and documentation.
- Support CI/CD processes and deployment automation where appropriate.
- Participate in application modernization efforts, including containerization and cloud-native deployment practices.
- Help establish scalable engineering processes as the platform continues to grow.

Required Qualifications

- 5-7+ years of experience in Database Engineering, Data Engineering, Backend Engineering, or a similar technical role.
- Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL.

- Experience designing

- Database schemas

- Table structures and relationships
- Primary and foreign key strategies

- Indexing and query optimization

- Relational data models
- Strong understanding of data architecture and data management best practices.
- Experience supporting applications from a database perspective, including the design of data access layers.
- Strong SQL development skills.
- Experience working with large, evolving datasets and establishing historical tracking strategies.
- Ability to troubleshoot performance issues and optimize database workloads.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work directly with technical and business stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with R Shiny.
- Experience developing or supporting web applications using technologies such as:

- React

- JavaScript/TypeScript

- Other modern web frameworks
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern software delivery practices.
- Containerization experience (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.).
- Experience designing analytics or reporting platforms.
- Familiarity with portfolio management, project management, or operational reporting data.
- Exposure to AI-assisted development tools and modern software engineering workflows.
- Experience working with API integrations and application data services.
