Overview of role:
WestJet is seeking an I ntermediate Analyst – Database Administrator reporting into our Database Services team. This individual will demonstrate a high standard of excellence, enjoy challenges, and be results-driven. The incumbent must be highly motivated and enjoy self-learning. The Intermediate Analyst – Database Administrator (DBA) works with a team comprised of Database Engineers (Senior Database Administrators) and MSP DBA resources. The DBA is responsible for administering, maintaining, and optimizing enterprise database platforms across Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Database, IBM Db2, and Azure SQL Database. This role supports day-to-day operations, ensuring database availability, reliability and performance. The DBA has hands‑on experience, strong troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to operational excellence.
This role participate s in the On-Call rotation .
Provide Database Administration and Operational Support to enterprise databases including monitoring, routine maintenance, high availability and disaster recovery configuration and testing, ensuring the health and availability of databases that support various business needs, minimizing downtime, preventing data loss, and maintaining performance and responsiveness
Administer database user accounts, roles, and permissions following principals of least privilege
Deploy security patches to protect sensitive data, reduce the risk of unauthorized access and protect against vulnerabilities and emerging threats
Monitor and optimize database solutions using monitoring tools to track performance, capacity, and system health to enable proactive issue detection and capacity planning along with recommending and implementing improvements to database configuration, indexing strategies, and resource utilization
Collaborate with application teams to implement efficient database structures, stored procedures, and queries, supporting release deployments, schema changes, and data migrations to ensure new features and applications are built on scalable,
high performing data foundations and current functionality is delivered smoothly with reduced deployment risks
In the event there is an incident involving database performance, availability or data integrity, assist with root cause analysis to prevent recurring issues and improve system reliability.
Support cloud migration and automation initiatives led by senior team members
Experience and qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or technical diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Database Administration or related field and 3-5 years of experience is required
3-5 years hands-on experience administering Microsoft SQL Server and / or Oracle Databases is required
Experience administering Azure SQL PaaS is preferred
Experience with IBM Db2 RDBMS is nice to have
Experience administering other database systems is nice to have
Proven experience with daily database operations including backup / restore (SQL Native and/or Oracle RMAN) and performance tuning
Experience in supporting High Availability & Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) database technologies such as SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Groups and/or Oracle Data Guard is required
Experience managing user accounts, roles, permissions and role-based access control (RBAC) is required
Ability to optimize SQL queries and stored procedures considered an asset
Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Redgate Monitor, Solarwinds DPA, Dynatrace, Oracle Enterprise Manager, and IBM Db2 Genius Hub is nice to have
Exposure to automation scripting languages such as PowerShell, Bash, and Python is nice to have
Understanding of networking basics relevant to database connectivity is required
Understanding of operating systems basics, Windows and/or Linux, is required
Understanding of IT Service Management practices
Certification in database administration (e.g. Oracle, Azure Database Administrator Associate, or equivalent SQL Server certification) is an asset
Attention to detail and operational discipline
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple task
Effective communication with technical and non-technical teams
Proactive mindset focused on reliability and performance
