The Department of Microbiology & Immunology and the Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of British Columbia (UBC) are inviting applications for a faculty position at the rank of Professor in Bacteriophage Biology & Evolution.
This recruitment represents a strategic expansion of UBC’s research excellence in microbiology, genomics, infectious disease and microbial evolution.
The university is seeking an outstanding researcher with an established and internationally recognized research program focused on areas including: Bacteria-phage interactions, Anti-phage defence, Bacterial immunity, Microbial evolution, Antimicrobial resistance, Bacterial diseases and epidemiology, Infectious disease emergence and pandemics
Research programs with an emphasis on the epidemiology of bacterial diseases in humans and pandemics are particularly encouraged. The successful candidate will become a core member of UBC’s interdisciplinary Prepare for Pandemics through Advanced Research in Evolution (PrePARE) research cluster, which focuses on understanding the emergence and evolution of infectious diseases and disease outbreaks.
The successful candidate will hold a joint appointment in the Michael Smith Laboratories and the Department of Microbiology & Immunology.
Key Responsibilities The successful candidate will be expected to:
Develop an innovative, externally funded and internationally competitive research program
Establish collaborations across UBC and beyond
Supervise graduate students and postdoctoral fellows
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in microbiology
Develop research programs addressing fundamental and current microbiological questions
Contribute to scientific publications and research leadership
Participate in departmental, university and academic community service
Contribute to a welcoming and inclusive academic setting
A substantial publication record in bacteriophage biology, microbial evolution, microbiology or a closely related field
Demonstrated research excellence
The ability to develop an externally funded research program
Experience or potential for graduate and postdoctoral supervision
A strong commitment to teaching and academic service
The position is particularly suited to established researchers with an internationally competitive research program in bacteriophage biology, bacteria-phage interactions, bacterial immunity, evolution, antimicrobial resistance or related areas.
