Position Summary
Reporting to the Chair of the School of Health Sciences, and in collaboration with the program coordinator and course instructor, this position will support the protected and efficient operations of Biology and Chemistry labs. Accountabilities will include on site student support, teaching support, and implementation and maintenance of laboratory procedures.

Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Course Instructor, the Lab Technician is responsible for
- Consulting with the course instructor and attending all preparatory laboratory meetings
- Ensuring student awareness of course objectives, approach, and evaluation techniques
- Reviewing blackboard for lessons and updating the course shells as directed by course instructor
- Reinforcing, demonstrating, assisting and supporting pre-learned principles and their application to skills and procedures
- Providing a learning environment that makes effective use of laboratory equipment
- Supporting and maintaining lab safety, cleanliness and organization
- Providing observation and monitoring student skills and progress using developed guidelines and criteria
- Reporting on student progress/achievement to the lab course instructor(s)
- Maintaining records of attendance and corresponding with students by email with responses within 48h business days
- Taking inventory of all consumables used in the labs and directing orders to the program coordinator as needed
- Maintaining and monitoring the wear and tear of all lab equipment and supplies
- Updating lab plans and assessments as directed by course instructor
- Ensuring an equitable and accessible learning community
- Proctoring exams/tests in a lab setting according to program guidelines and expectations as outlined by the course Instructor.
Qualifications Education, Qualifications And Other Requirements
- Minimum two (2) year diploma in health science or related field
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Completed WHMIS/Hazardous materials training
Experience
- Previous formal or informal lab technician experience is considered an asset
Skills
- Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Understanding of and commitment to equity in education
- Commitment to a team approach for problem-solving and conflict resolution.
- Demonstrated ability to provide clarity in guiding/advising others to accurately explain processes and procedures in a lab setting
- Ability to organize workload, establish priorities and work with minimal supervision
