The Material Handling Technician will be responsible for the safe and effective movement, loading, and unloading of rail cars, loading bulk trucks and packaging and movement of materials.
Reporting to the Moore Site Shift Supervisor, the Material Handling Technicians will work in the Material Handling & Raw Material support areas of the Moore Site.
You Will Use Your Expertise To: Ensure customer demands for timely delivery of NOVA products occurs through prompt packaging, loading and unloading of rail cars
Meet schedules and timelines developed jointly with the Logistic department
Ensure NOVA Chemical's safe work practices and policies are always maintained
Monitor unit conditions on an ongoing basis and carry out troubleshooting steps to address identified issues
Maintain housekeeping standards within the Operating unit
Participate in team safety meetings, safety audits and follow-ups
Support and participate in on-site and regional Emergency Response Teams
Additional Duties in the Following Areas Include: Packaging Operations (Boxing): Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures and equipment troubleshooting throughout packaging
Manual preparation of corrugated boxes, fill operation, monitoring and final capping/stenciling of boxes
Complete sampling of packaging production for QC Lab analysis
Operating fork trucks for movement of packaged product to warehouse storage
Documentation of reports/logs (Packaged Production, Operating Logs)
Computer SAP and SAP-OSEM entries of packaging production data
Truck Loading and Warehouse Operations: Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures and equipment troubleshooting
Inspection / equipment checks on fork trucks, door hydraulic ramps/controls, product storage safety
Fork truck loading of highway vans and containers for shipment of packaged product
Fork truck off-loading, inspection and storage of incoming Raw Materials and supplies
Inputting material, which passes the C of A, into SAP Inventory




Verification and documentation of packaging volumes to external customers, incoming product to NOVA and conduct periodic inventory of warehouse product
Maintain communications with Transportation Scheduling group on priorities and driver representatives
Documentation of reports/logs (Operating Logs)
Material Flow Outside Area Duties: Maintain the cleanliness of the Material Flow units(washing, sweeping, garbage’s, etc.)
Cleansing of all process waterways, ditches, ponds, etc.
Semi-Annual washing down of production and packaging bins to maintain ISO quality standards
Quality sampling of finished goods in the railcars as required
Emptying trashrecycle luggers throughout both areas
Managing of full lab “scrap” ton packs (weighing, storage, and shipping.)
Ensuring loading barn is stocked up with cable seals and additives
Spill response for Resin/ Powder
Documentation of reports/logs (Operating Logs)
Locomotive Operations: Knowledge of Railyard layout, switches, derails
Knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures and equipment troubleshooting capabilities
Equipment checks, start-up, operating and shutdown of Diesel Locomotive(s)
Documentation of various reports (equipment checklists, car movements)
Operates locomotive and maintains safe operating speed throughout Railyard while being guided by Brakeman through radio communications on car movements (start/stop movements)
Brakeman Operator: Responsible for radio communication andinstructionto locomotive operator on safe distances/speeds to reach and couple to stationary rail cars
Applies or sets air and/or hand brakes on hopper cars
Operates/sets derails and rail switches for all car movements throughout the Railyard
Shunt Crew Operations: Performs all technical functions/duties outlined for Locomotive Operations noted above
Responsible for operating, equipment checks and troubleshooting for Plant Weigh Scale
Shunt individual cars for completing weight checks, entry of hopper car weights, as well as performing periodic check of weigh scale accuracy with aid of Weigh Scale Test Car
Movement of rail cars within Railyard/Loading Barns, for shipment, off-loading to bulk trucks/storage or other purposes
Maintain communications with Transportation Scheduling group and MF DCS Board Operator to prioritize shunting needs
Documentation of reports (H/C production weights, scale tickets, yard line-ups, H/C inventory via SAP/GVP)
Computer entry of H/C movements
Inspection of Inbound railcars (Security and Logistics Inspections)
Documentation of reports/logs (Operating Logs)
What We Are Looking For: High School Diploma or equivalent




Prior rail yard operations and/or railcar loading/unloading experience and/or packaging experience
The candidate will be expected to advance to Level 4 in the Material Handling Progression through self-motivation and company-based support and training
Computer skills in Microsoft Excel and SAP applications is considered an asset
Demonstrated trouble shooting skills
Quality Control experience (ISO Program/Systems)
Targeted Safety and Health training and/or experience (e.g., WHMIS/MSDS, Fire Equipment, Environmental Spills, First Aid/CPR, AED/02, Personal Protective Equipment)
Self-motived and demonstrates strong people and communication skills
Ability to interact with and support a team culture
Demonstrated ability to manage competing demands in a logical organized manner
Must be a self-starter, who is resourceful and has demonstrated problem-solving skills
Prior Forklift Truck Training and experience
Valid G driver’s license

Additional Information: Relocation will NOT be considered for this position
Compensation will be commensurate with education and experience
This role requires no/ad hoc travel
This position will work on a seven (7) day, twelve (12) hour rotating days/nights schedule and/or Monday to Friday eight (8) hour days
Work will be conducted both indoors and outdoors in all seasons
Positions will include some lifting and climbing of ladders within various levels of the units
Overtime and callouts are a requirement of the role due to the 24 hour per day plant operation
In order to fulfil the duties of this role, the successful candidate will be required to wear respiratory protective equipment. Candidate must successfully pass a fit test and be physically able to wear a respirator
The successful candidate is required to provide proof of a valid driver’s license
