Job Description Why Onni Capital
Most property tax professionals spend a career inside a billable hours model where the incentive is to do the work again rather than to build something that does it once. Valorem is the opposite bet.
You will have engineers. Real ones, using modern AI development tools, sitting in the same office, whose job is to build what you tell them the market needs. Your expertise becomes leverage rather than capacity.
You will also have an unusual proving ground. Onni's own portfolio gives you a large, real, and immediately available book of assessments to work on, which means the product gets tested against genuine complexity rather than sample data.
And this is a product with a transparent path. Valorem is one of the businesses Onni Capital intends to grow into a standalone company. Being the domain authority in a software company at this stage is a materially different position than being one of many consultants in a practice.
Onni Capital is being designed as a high ownership, low bureaucracy team. We work in small project groups, test ideas quickly, put early products in front of users, and make decisions based on evidence rather than hierarchy.
Team members are expected to: Challenge assumptions and communicate directly
Take responsibility for outcomes, not simply produce recommendations
Use modern AI tools to work faster and produce better results
Share unfinished work early and improve it through feedback
Move comfortably between strategic analysis and hands on execution
Know when to continue investing in an idea and when to stop
Operate effectively without a detailed playbook
This is not a role for someone who wants months of consensus building, a rigid job description, or a narrowly defined set of responsibilities. It is for someone who learns quickly, takes initiative,

enjoys solving ambiguous problems, and wants to help build something from the ground up.
What You Will Do Practice Review property assessments across residential, commercial, industrial, and mixed use assets, and identify where an assessment is wrong and why
Build and argue appeal cases, including comparable selection, income approach analysis, cost approach analysis, and market evidence
Represent clients and Onni entities through the appeal process, including assessment authority negotiation and appeal board hearings
Manage the appeal calendar across jurisdictions, including deadlines, filings, and evidence requirements
Quantify and report tax savings achieved, which is the number the business is measured on
Product Work directly with the product and engineering team to translate assessment methodology into product logic, including valuation approaches, comparable selection, and appeal argument structure
Define what good output looks like and set the quality standard the platform is measured against
Test the platform against real assessments and real appeals, and be honest about where it is not yet good enough
Prioritise the product roadmap from a practitioner's view of what actually saves time and what only looks impressive in a demo
Advise on jurisdictional expansion, including which markets to build for next and what each one requires
Commercial Support sales, including demonstrations, prospect conversations,

and technical credibility with sophisticated buyers
Onboard and support customers, including training and ongoing advisory
Build relationships across the property tax and assessment community, including assessors, appraisers, brokers, and industry bodies
Contribute to positioning and content that establishes Valorem's credibility in the market
What You Bring Five or more years in property tax assessment and appeals, at a specialist consultancy, an assessment authority, an appraisal firm, or in house at a large property owner
A track record of successful appeals you can speak to specifically, including the argument that won and the savings delivered
Deep command of valuation methodology, including income, cost, and direct comparison approaches
Working knowledge of assessment legislation, appeal procedure, and evidence requirements in at least one major North American jurisdiction, with the ability to learn others
Experience across asset classes, particularly multifamily, commercial, and industrial
Genuine interest in technology and automation, and a willingness to spend real time with a product team rather than treating it as a distraction from the work
Demonstrated ability to use modern AI tools in analytical work
Strong written communication. Appeal submissions and client reporting both live or die on the writing
Comfort in front of clients, assessors, and appeal boards
Comfort working in a small, fast moving team building a product that is still changing
High personal standards for accuracy, quality, ownership, and follow through
Nice to Have AACI, MRICS, CMI, or equivalent professional designation
Multi jurisdiction experience across Canada and the United States
