Job Description Summary
This position contributes to the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive framework of residence life services that foster student learning, success, community engagement, and meaningful orientation and transition experiences. Establishes a student-centred service culture and supports the delivery of the UBC residential experience.
Residence Life is a 24-hour operation providing support to students and responding to all resident crises and residence emergencies as well as inquiries from students, parents, emergency services and other university personnel. This position is responsible for providing a residence life program that furthers student recruitment, retention, academic success, personal, and community and leadership development. The Assistant Director, Residence Life sets operational goals for and provides leadership and direction to residence life program curriculum development, staff recruitment, training and development, and student leadership development. This position provides leadership and operational direction to a team of Residence Life Managers, unionized Residence Advisors, Senior Residence Advisors, and Program Resource Centre Advisors. This position contributes to establishing the overall vision for the UBC Okanagan residence experience and is responsible for the implementation and evaluation of the unit's strategic priorities. Reports to the Associate Director, Housing & Conference Services. Directly supervises 5 Residence Life Managers, and 2 seasonal Interns. Indirectly supervises, 10 Senior Residence Advisors, 3 Program Resource Centre Advisors, 72 Residence Advisors. Works closely with departmental and University senior managers and liaises with other departmental staff, campus priority initiative groups (C+CP, Sustainability, etc.)
and Associate Vice President, Students units. Acts as the designate for the Associate Director, Housing & Conference Services, as required. Work Performed
Employee Management
Leads, influences and advances the implementation, assessment and continuous improvement of student experience standards within residence from application through departure. As part of the leadership team, works with the Associate Director, Housing & Conference Services to develop and assess the strategic goals and service standards of the unit. Builds, motivates and creates a team of Management & Professional and unionized part-time student staff. My organised? Responsible for full cycle recruitment of Residence Life Managers, which includes job descriptions, interviews, training and onboarding. Manages, leads, and directs the orientation and training of 90 Residence Life student staff. Leads the development of an integrated and comprehensive career development curriculum for student staff. Conducts performance management processes of all Residence Life Managers and Residence Life student staff, which includes discipline and terminations. Responsible for the collection and processing of sensitive employee and student information requiring tact and discretion, adhering to UBC s policies related to privacy and information security. Responsible for implementing and overseeing employee absentee management. Works on human resources initiatives including succession planning and staff recognition programs.
