Job Description Manager, Infection Control (IPAC) Mission The IC Manager supports the development and implementation of Extendicare’s person‑centered care philosophy. The IC Manager is accountable for establishing a culture of compliance and adherence to Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) practices while supporting residents, families, and colleagues.
Key Responsibilities IPAC Program Leadership & Oversight Manage and oversee the IPAC program for the home
Lead the IPAC team within the home
Implement Extendicare’s IPAC policies and procedures
Participate in the development, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Home’s IPAC Program
Implement directives issued by the Chief Medical Officer of Health or the Minister of Long‑Term Care
Surveillance, Auditing & Quality Improvement Conduct regular infectious disease surveillance
Ensure resident surveillance is completed in HealthConnex by the nurse/designate at the time of symptom onset, with appropriate interventions implemented
Ensure staff surveillance is completed in HealthConnex by site managers
Audit IPAC practices within the home
Trend and analyze audit results and investigate root causes using a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) model
Prepare action plans and recommend improvements to ensure adherence to IPAC standards
Outbreak Management Convene and actively participate in the Outbreak Team at outbreak onset and throughout the duration of the outbreak
Review, trend, and analyze daily and monthly screening results
Ensure the home maintains a comprehensive hand hygiene program for residents, staff, and visitors
Education & Staff Development Oversee delivery of IPAC education to staff, caregivers, volunteers, visitors, and residents
Identify IPAC education and training needs within the home
Coordinate and facilitate staff development programs to improve quality of care and support Extendicare’s person‑centered care philosophy
Provide ongoing education on IPAC principles, practices, and emerging infectious diseases and organisms
Collaboration & Communication Participate in interdisciplinary and quality team meetings to support IPAC across all disciplines
Attend regional IPAC meetings, education sessions, and communities of practice and report on the Home’s IPAC Program status
Develop and maintain relationships with the HUB, local Public Health, laboratory representatives, and regional and national IPAC leads
Maintain liaison with hospitals, medical staff, community partners, and health‑care disciplines to ensure effective IPAC‑related care delivery
Resident & Family Engagement Participate in Care Conferences as appropriate
Meet with residents and families to address IPAC‑related concerns, problems, or complaints
Promote resident satisfaction and continuous quality improvement initiatives
Align resident care services with the needs of the internal and external community
Leadership & Administration Oversee financial and human resource management aspects of the IPAC function
Hire, direct, supervise, evaluate, promote, or terminate staff as required
Ensure quality care and a safe, effective, and efficient work environment
Identify and support ethical issues related to IPAC using Extendicare’s Ethics Program
Assume responsibilities of the Executive Director and/or other managers in their absence
Perform other duties as assigned
Professional Accountability Maintain required education, certifications, and credentials in accordance with applicable regulations
Be knowledgeable of and promote the Resident Bill of Rights and Governing Principles
Uphold and promote Extendicare’s Core Values and Code of Conduct
Qualifications Education and experience in IPAC, including:
Infectious Diseases
Cleaning and Disinfection
Data Collection and Trend Analysis
Reporting Protocols
Outbreak Management
Asepsis and Microbiology
Adult Education
Epidemiology
Program Management
Successful completion of an IPAC Canada–endorsed course upon hire or within one year of hire
Current certification in Infection Control from the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) (on or before April 11, 2025)
Minimum of one (1) year of experience working as a health‑care professional in the long‑term care sector
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a managerial or supervisory capacity in a health‑care setting (preferred)
Demonstrated leadership and communication skills
Professional competencies related to life‑long learning, public relations, and health‑care environment awareness
Strong motivational, team‑building, and time‑management skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and iPads
Proficiency in a second language is considered an asset
