Job Description Vacancy Status: This posting is not for an existing vacancy within the organization and is open to new applications. (New Head Count) AI Disclosure: As part of the application process, Artificial Intelligence will be used in the hiring process for this role
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Markham three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].
About the role This role is intended for a highly capable technical engineer who can define diagnostic requirements that will be translated into production‑ready embedded controls for Driveline and Trailering Mechatronic systems within the Chassis domain. The position sits at the intersection of systems engineering, diagnostic architecture, embedded software, controller integration, and vehicle‑level validation, with primary focus on diagnostic strategy, requirements, and architecture. The ideal candidate is a systems‑oriented diagnostic engineer with a strong understanding of embedded controls, vehicle diagnostics, and chassis mechatronic systems. Experience includes defining diagnostic requirements, fault detection strategies, DTC implementation requirements, fault maturation and recovery criteria, and diagnostic validation plans for production vehicle programs.
Key responsibilities Own diagnostic specification development for Driveline and Trailering mechatronic sub‑systems, including DTC strategy, enable and inhibit conditions, set and recovery logic, customer notification strategy, remedial actions, and diagnostic data requirements such as freeze frame and Figure of Merit expectations.
Directly support software implementation across controller, subsystem, and vehicle levels, including software integration, anomaly resolution, and technical issue troubleshooting.
Drive robust diagnostic design reviews with internal GM stakeholders and suppliers, ensuring implementation meets GM requirements, passes software design review gates, and is approved for release.
Improve diagnostic robustness for edge cases such as environmental variation, part‑to‑part variation, startup and initialization behavior, hot starts, transient power behavior, and partial networking conditions.
Support common, standardized diagnostic architecture across Mechanical Driveline and Trailering controls, including creation and execution of diagnostic CGs, regression testing strategy, and diagnostic design governance.
Collaborate cross‑functionally with systems, controls, calibration, software integration, validation, manufacturing, product, and supplier teams to deliver high‑quality technical solutions in a SAFe / agile development environment.
Contribute technically to integrated chassis feature development where Driveline and Trailering capabilities intersect with braking, steering, suspension, propulsion torque management, and broader vehicle motion coordination.
Act as a senior technical contributor and domain leader, helping raise the organization’s capability in diagnostic specification and mechatronic systems understanding.
Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering,

Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent technical degree / experience.
5+ years of experience in embedded controls, systems engineering, diagnostics, software development, or a related automotive engineering discipline.
Experience defining diagnostic requirements, fault detection strategies, DTC implementation requirements, fault maturation and recovery criteria, recovery logic, and diagnostic validation plans for production vehicle programs.
Strong working knowledge of safety‑critical software development and engineering best practices consistent with ISO 26262.
Knowledge and familiarity with Mechatronic Infrastructure Systems such as Ethernet/CAN/LIN, Diagnostics, Programming, HWIO, Power Management, and Cybersecurity.
Strong analytical and problem‑solving ability with capability to resolve unusual and difficult technical problems and drive issues to closure.
Robust written and verbal communication skills, with ability to work effectively across internal GM teams and external supplier organizations.
Knowledge of software development lifecycle and testing methodologies.
Knowledge of DOORS/DNG, GIT environment(s); plant modeling and/or analysis tools.
Preferred qualifications Direct experience in Driveline and/or Trailering mechatronic systems, such as AWD, 4WD, eLSD, eLocker, Trailer Brake controls.
Experience working with supplier‑developed software and diagnostics, including review, approval, integration, and issue resolution across GM and supplier interfaces.
Experience with SW specification, calibration, controller integration, and hands‑on validation in bench and vehicle environments.
Knowledge of Agile/Scrum methodologies.
Familiarity with PHM, Figure of Merit concepts, early fleet diagnostic monitoring, and data‑driven diagnostic health improvement methods.
Strong knowledge of CICD process pipeline like GitHub Actions and Jenkins.
Ability to collaborate with AI Agent.
Understanding of software version control systems (e.g., Git).
Experience and exposure to root cause investigation strategies such as Fishbone, 5 Whys, Fault Tree Analysis, RedX, DFSS.
Experience with test tools such as CANoe, Vehicle Spy, INCA, AutoVAL, Wire Shark, Lauderbauch T32, PCAP files.
