This is a 1-year contract position based in Charlottetown.
Your role
CBC Prince Edward Island is looking for a key member of the newsroom- a Provincial Affairs Reporter.
This reporter position requires an incredible breadth of knowledge about all things government: the Legislature, policy, political history, key players and an overall expertise in issues affecting Islanders.
The accurate, in-depth, objective coverage of a government and its decisions has never been more key-with the current global political climate. The successful person will have the drive, understanding of procedure and process of the P.E.I Legislature.
The successful candidate will be a key member of CBC P.E.I.'s newsroom with a keen news sense, superior editorial judgement and excellent initiative.
As the Provincial Affairs Reporter you will be responsible for providing daily coverage of agenda items at Province House,
while also searching out and producing impactful enterprise stories that tell the story of Islanders and the province's diverse communities.
You are experienced at reporting for multiple platforms and are comfortable working in radio, television, and digital.
You will need to advance CBC News objectives around innovation in visual storytelling to meet the needs of multiple audiences across several digital and linear platforms.
You have live reporting experience and would be a key part of CBC Prince Edward Island's provincial election shows. Your knowledge of P.E.I. would be an asset in providing important context and analysis to the audience.
Key Tasks
- Develops and maintains a network of provincial contacts as well as an array of recognized experts and authorities able to comment on political issues and events.
- Regularly reports on air and across all platforms, describing events and issues; provides in-depth background information and detailed analysis on policy and political developments for all platforms to enhance the understanding of provincial affairs for the audience.
- Gathers and researches information on political or governmental issues and events.
- Can report a range of stories to advance underserved communities engagement with and understanding of provincial politics.
- Follows issues of significant interest as they develop over a period of time and can report with the ability to add context to political news developments.
- Regularly checks material gathered against other sources to ensure clarity and accuracy of content.
- Arranges for, and conducts interviews across all platforms.
- Works closely with program personnel to plan coverage of upcoming events for all platforms, particularly as they relate to provincial politics.
- Conceives of, and works closely with production personnel to produce innovative and informative material for all platforms which aid in the explanation of the issue being presented.
- Writes introductory and linking continuity for daily reports and news programs. Critically edits material written by others and/or items produced by others.
- Provides leadership and advice and guidance to colleagues and coworkers; leads by example.
- As assigned or required, performs any function or task of a Reporter /Editor.
Qualifications
- University degree or equivalent
- Lived experience
- Five (5) years' directly related experience in a multi-platform news environment
- Visual storytelling experience
- Live reporting experience
- Superior journalistic skills and news judgement
- Demonstrable knowledge of P.E.I politics and Legislative processes and procedures
- Excellent reporting and interviewing skills across platforms
- Ability to work with a variety of teams but also be a strong self-starter
- Critical mind
- Proven ability to work in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment
- Familiarity with CBC/Radio-Canada production tools an asset (Dalet, iNews, MediaCentral, Polopoly)
