Our client, an established NPO, is seeking a Financial Modeller for a temporary assignment with their Edmonton finance team.
Position Overview: A short-term assignment updating several complex financial models that drive the organization's long range strategic planning.
The models already exist. The work is to refresh them with the latest financial and regulatory information, rebuild the assumptions behind them, and make sure the outputs hold up under scrutiny.
The models cover the two questions the organization plans around: how it generates the donated goods that fund the mission, and what workforce it needs to deliver on its goals.
The work extends past the revenue and cost lines. Cash flow and the balance sheet are modelled across the full projection period so the plan holds together financially.
The finished models are presented to the board of directors and the executive team, so the work has to be accurate, defensible and clearly presented.
This is a hands‑on individual contributor assignment working directly with the Chief Financial Officer.
Responsibilities: Update several complex financial models that are already built, refreshing them with the latest financial and regulatory information available.
Update the donation model, which projects what the organization needs in order to generate the volume of donated goods it requires.
Model how many donation centres are needed to reach the required donation volumes.
Model how many current community and employer partnerships are needed to support those volumes.
Model the square footage required across the retail and donation network to support the plan.
Model the approaches available for selling donated goods, and the financial outcome of each.
Update the human capital model, which projects the workforce required to deliver on the organization's goals and objectives.
Model the number of people needed by function to meet those goals, and the total cost of that workforce.
Model cash flow across the full projection period, covering both the near term base case and the long range scenarios.
Model the balance sheet across the full projection period, reflecting the organization's asset base, obligations and reserves.
Tie the cash flow and balance sheet outputs back to the operating models so the projections reconcile to one another.
Build the 2 to 3 year horizon of every model as a concrete, factual and realistic base case.
Build the 5 to 10 year horizon as an ambitious growth scenario, projecting aggressively against the organization's long term goals rather than forecasting a base case.
Document the assumptions behind each model so the finance team can maintain and re‑run them after the assignment ends.
Prepare the model outputs in a form that can be presented to the board of directors and the executive team.
