Reporting to the School Chair, Academic Upgrading & Development, this position supports students with developmental disabilities in the Steps to Opportunities, Academics & Readiness (SOAR) program. In a supportive environment, the Communications Access Student Assistant will support, motivate and communicate with student(s) in a skilled, empathetic and confidential manner. They will work closely with SOAR instructors & instructional assistants to implement tools & strategies to enrich the student experience.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Provide support to students with developmental disabilities including:
- Behaviour support for education-related activities
- Communication support
- Adaptive technology support
- Production support for alternate learning material formats
- Administrative support to the SOAR instructor(s)/instructional assistant(s)
- Additional duties as required based on student need
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Ability to support individuals with developmental disabilities in a learning environment
- Ability to encourage, motivate and involve clients in classroom activities
- Ability to communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with families, educational personnel, social workers and resource workers, service providers and partners
- Discretion when dealing with confidential matters
- Excellent organizational skills
Education and Experience
- Completion of a Human Services program*
- Experience in a role working with people with developmental disabilities (minimum of 1 year of experience or combination of education and experience)
- Experience supporting mental health & wellness in the classroom
- Criminal Record Clearance, Ministry of Justice
*An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
This is a temporary, part-time (37.5%) position, commencing September 3, 2026, and ending December 18, 2026, with the possibility of extension through the winter semester. Salary will be Pay Grade 7, $32.09 per hour in accordance with the PPWC Collective Agreement.
