WILDLIFE SWEEPER / WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST
Grande Prairie, Alberta Area
We are seeking an experienced Wildlife Sweeper/Wildlife Biologist to support projects throughout the Grande Prairie region and northern Alberta.
The successful candidate will conduct pre-disturbance wildlife sweeps, identify wildlife features and sensitive habitat, recommend appropriate setbacks and mitigation measures, and prepare detailed field reports and mapping.
Qualifications and requirements
- Degree in biology, wildlife biology, environmental science, or a closely related discipline.
- Extensive experience conducting wildlife sweeps in northern Alberta.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable federal and provincial wildlife legislation, regulations, guidelines, approval conditions, and best-management practices.
- Strong working knowledge of Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and Canada Energy Regulator (CER) requirements.
- Familiarity with requirements concerning migratory birds, nesting activity, species at risk, wetlands, watercourses, wildlife features, and sensitive habitat.
- Demonstrated experience completing wildlife sweeps for rights-of-way, pipelines, well sites, access roads, facility sites, and other industrial disturbances.
- Ability to identify northern Alberta wildlife species, nests, dens, roosts, mineral licks, trails, breeding areas, and other wildlife features.
- Ability to establish and clearly communicate appropriate setbacks, mitigation measures, timing restrictions, and stop-work recommendations.
- Solid GPS, GIS, and digital mapping abilities, including experience working with geo-referenced maps and field-data collection applications.
- Ability to prepare and submit accurate, detailed, and timely reports complete with maps, photographs, field observations, coordinates, identified concerns, and mitigation recommendations.
- Proven history of successfully completing similar wildlife work.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in remote locations and communicate effectively with supervisors, equipment operators, construction crews, environmental personnel, regulators, and clients.
- Valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record.
- Required safety certifications for industrial fieldwork, or the ability to obtain them before starting.
Responsibilities:
- Review project plans, mapping, approval conditions, and wildlife information before mobilization.
- Conduct thorough wildlife sweeps ahead of construction, vegetation clearing, mowing, spraying, or other ground-disturbing activities.
- Document wildlife observations and sensitive features using GPS coordinates, photographs, field notes, and mapping.
- Flag or map required setbacks and communicate restrictions to field personnel.
- Provide practical mitigation recommendations that satisfy regulatory and project requirements.
- Monitor work activities when environmental or wildlife conditions require on-site oversight.
- Immediately report significant wildlife findings and advise when work must be modified, delayed, or stopped.
- Complete daily field documentation and detailed final reports within required timelines.
- Maintain professional communication with clients and project personnel.
The ideal candidate will be dependable, safety-conscious, highly organized, and confident making field decisions. Applicants must understand the practical requirements of wildlife sweeping in northern Alberta and be capable of producing professional, defensible documentation.
