Description
The Law Society of Alberta (LSA) regulates the legal profession in the public interest.
In alignment with the Law Society’s vision, mission, and strategic plan, the Membership department provides membership application and processing support while handling inquiries related to membership status, indemnity changes, and renewals. Specifically, Membership is responsible for administration of applications, status changes, the mobility of interjurisdictional members, and Professional Corporation and Limited Liability Partnerships. The department also manages the Admission Program for Students-at-Law and supports the annual fee billing cycle for both the Law Society of Alberta and Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association.
The Membership Services Representatives (MSR’s) share the responsibility for the administration of applications and business services outlined below. The MSR's are a strong group of customer service oriented team members who work together in a fast-paced environment with a high volume workload. The MSR role requires an aptitude towards trouble-shooting and the ability to develop skills to interpret the Law Society Rules and Legal Profession Act, as well as an understanding of the regulatory role of the Law Society.
Success in this position requires excellent communication and time management skills allied with the ability to manage multiple priorities while working in a self-motivated environment.
A strong aptitude for providing excellent customer service is essential.
Key Responsibilities
As a member of the Membership team you will:
Communicate with customers in a courteous, attentive and knowledgeable way;
Process membership applications and update lawyer profiles in accordance with regulatory requirements
Make informed decisions within the Law Society’s regulatory framework and elevate to Membership Legal Services when required
Support the overall functioning of the department across multiple transactions
Identify, document and support continuous improvement initiatives
Support the transition of key business transactions online
Develop and maintain professional working relationships across multiple departments
Maintain strong data integrity standards for database entries
Process membership status applications
Process student applications and enrollments
Convert students and mobility profiles to members in the database
Update changes to status and contact information in the database
Assist with the Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP)
Process Canadian Lawyer applications from other Canadian jurisdictions
Review and process foreign lawyer applications to confirm eligibility and qualification
Administer permit applications for Professional Corporations and Limited Liability Partnerships
Review and process amendments to Professional Corporations and Limited Liability Partnerships
Coordinate refund requests with Accounting
Support data stewardship through reconciliations, reporting, monitoring and corrections
Participate in internal and multi-department projects
Support the transition of key transactions to e-commerce and ongoing e-business improvements
Other tasks as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum 3-5 years of administrative experience
Experience working in an e-commerce environment is considered an asset
Excellent customer service, communication, time management and organizational skills
Experience managing a high-volume workload
Excellent attention to detail and comprehension skills
Demonstrated ability to take initiative to ensure goals are met
Problem solving and trouble-shooting skills
Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
Reliable, flexible and adaptable
Intermediate or stronger skills in Word, Excel, Outlook and SharePoint
A team player who is able to work independently with minimal supervision
