Reporting to the Chair of the School of Health Sciences, this position will play a key role in supporting student success by ensuring our Opticianry laboratories are equipped, organized, and operating at the highest standard. Working closely with faculty and academic leaders, you will help create an engaging and safe laboratory experience that bridges classroom theory with real-world practice.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Chair of the School of Health Sciences, this position will play a key role in supporting student success by ensuring our Opticianry laboratories are equipped, organized, and operating at the highest standard. Working closely with faculty and academic leaders, you will help create an engaging and safe laboratory experience that bridges classroom theory with real-world practice.
Responsibilities
Maintain and monitor Opticianry laboratory equipment to ensure it is functional, calibrated, and available for teaching and learning activities.
Coordinate routine maintenance, repairs, and replacement of laboratory equipment and resources.
Maintain accurate inventories, equipment records, and laboratory documentation.
Ensure laboratories are safe, organized, and compliant with health and safety requirements.
Set up laboratory environments and resources to support course delivery and student learning.
Provide faculty members with guidance on equipment operation, laboratory procedures, and best practices.
Deliver laboratory orientations for current and existing instructors, including equipment use, safety protocols, and operational procedures.
Partner with faculty to develop and maintain laboratory resources that support practical skill development.
Order, track, and maintain laboratory supplies, tools, and learning resources.
Build and maintain relationships with industry suppliers and equipment vendors.
Stay current with emerging technologies, equipment, and trends within the opticianry profession.
Attend relevant team meetings to provide updates on labs.
Qualifications
Education, Qualifications and Other Requirements
Minimum two (2) year diploma in Opticianry
Registered in good standing with the College of Opticians of Ontario (COO)
CPR and First Aid certification
Completed WHMIS/Hazardous materials training
Experience
Minimum three (3) years of optical/optician dispensing experience
Working experience with repairing lensometers, refraction equipment, keratometers, slit-lamps and edgers
Skills
Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and communication skills (written and verbal)
Understanding of and commitment to equity in education
Demonstrated ability to provide clarity in guiding/advising others to accurately explain processes and procedures
Ability to organize workload, establish priorities and work with minimal supervision
