Summary
This role is ideally suited for physicians trained in Emergency Medicine – or those with backgrounds in Family Practice or Internal Medicine who possess significant Emergency Medicine experience.
Qualifications
- United States citizenship (or eligibility as per VA policy).
- Doctor of Medicine or equivalent, from a VA‑approved medical school.
- Full, unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, territory, or D.C.
- Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification (or meeting alternative residency/experience criteria).
- Board eligible or board certified in Emergency Medicine preferred; board certified in Family Practice or Internal Medicine with Emergency Department or Urgent Care experience also considered.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Physical requirements: visual acuity, hearing, speech, manual dexterity, ability to walk, stand, stoop, bend, transfer patients, wear protective clothing, and tolerate exposure to infectious or combative patients under stressful conditions.
Basic Requirements
- Alternative pathways such as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs)
and additional post‑medical‑school training/independent practice are allowed under specific VA guidelines.
- PRPs must hold a full license and may work on an intermittent basis.
- Residents enrolled in accredited programs are eligible for PRP status if they meet basic requirements.
Duties
- Diagnose and treat acute and urgent medical conditions in an urgent care setting.
- Perform common procedures (suturing, splinting, incision, and drainage).
- Interpret diagnostic tests, including laboratory results and imaging studies.
- Provide immediate patient‑centered care, manage diverse case mix, and make critical decisions for treatment plans.
- Collaborate with the Veterans Patient‑Aligned Care Team and other healthcare professionals.
- Supervise ancillary staff and guide them as necessary.
- Stay current with evidence‑based practices and contribute to continuous improvement of service quality and patient safety.
