The Director of Tax is responsible for overseeing all corporate tax functions, ensuring compliance with federal, provincial, and local regulations, and providing strategic tax guidance to support business decisions. This role manages complex tax filings, leads tax planning initiatives.
The position reports directly to the Senior Vice President of Accounting Operations and operates within a fast paced, cooperative real estate environment with opportunities for growth.
This role is expected to evolve to include companywide tax process improvements, enhanced automation, and strengthening of controls within the tax function.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation and review of corporate income tax returns (corporations, trusts, and partnerships), HST filings, and all statutory tax reports.
- Manage year end and quarterly tax provisions, including deferred tax calculations and reconciliations.
- Oversee tax audits and liaise with external auditors, government agencies, and tax authorities.
- Develop and implement tax planning strategies to minimize tax liabilities and support organizational growth.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and assess potential impacts on the organization.
- Provide guidance on tax implications for transactions, financing, structuring, and strategic initiatives.
- Lead improvements to tax processes, controls, documentation, and workflow efficiency.
- Support and guide junior tax and finance staff.
- Support M&A; activities, including tax due diligence and structuring work (as applicable).
- Oversee tax matters related to land transfer tax, and other real estate-specific obligations as required.
- Ensure proper tax treatment for partnerships, joint ventures, and development projects.
- Support structuring and compliance across multi entity real estate development operations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Completion of the In-depth Level I & II is an asset
- 7–10+ years of tax experience, including at least 3 years in a managerial or senior capacity.
- Solid knowledge of Canadian corporate tax laws, HST, and related compliance requirements.
- Advanced experience in tax provisions.
- Proficiency in tax research and tax software.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex tax matters.
- Experience working with or exposure to partnership and joint venture tax structures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Public accounting firm experience (Big 4 or mid tier) strongly preferred.
- Experience in corporate tax planning, and restructuring
- Experience in a multi entity or multi province corporate workplace.
- Real estate tax experience (property tax, development-related charges, etc.) is an asset.
- Experience with NEWSTAR or similar real estate development/accounting systems.
- Experience using SharePoint for documentation management, workflows, or internal collaboration.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong leadership and team development capabilities.
- Excellent communication skills, able to convey complex tax concepts clearly
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast paced environment.
- High proficiency with Excel and financial systems.
- Ability to drive process improvement, standardization, and workflow optimization within the tax function.
- Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across Finance, Operations, Legal, and Development teams.
- Comfort working with digital tools such as SharePoint
