ABOUT BREAKTHROUGH ACADEMY
Breakthrough Academy specializes in helping high-performing entrepreneurs in the contracting industry grow their businesses by implementing excellent operational systems into their companies. We believe in the unlimited potential of entrepreneurship and help our Members (customers) break through barriers and take their businesses to the next level. Our proprietary training program brings systemization to a contracting company's operations, develops an entrepreneur's core business skills, and holds accountability to goals through a clear business plan.
Breakthrough Academy is now 11 years old and evolving rapidly, with over 750 business owners developing inside our program, and an incredible team of 55+ individuals who make an impact on our Members every single day. We're now entering one of the most exciting chapters in our company's history. We have a proven market, a strong brand, an incredible community of Members, and a tremendous opportunity ahead of us.
Our People & Culture team plays an important role in making sure the people behind that growth have the support, clarity, and experience they need to do their best work. We take our culture seriously, we care about the experience people have here, and we believe great People & Culture work combines genuine care with thoughtful, practical action.
We're looking for a People & Culture Specialist to join the team for an 18-month maternity leave contract. This is an opportunity to step into an established function, work closely with leaders and team members across the organization, and take real ownership of the day-to-day People & Culture experience at BTA.
This is where you come in.
THIS IS FOR YOU IF:
- You like being the person people trust. You're approachable,
you listen well, and when someone comes to you with a question or problem, you take it seriously and help them find a path forward.
- You have a high bar for yourself. You care about getting the details right, following through on commitments, and making sure things are done properly rather than just checked off a list.
- You enjoy the human side of P&C; just as much as the operational side. You can have a thoughtful conversation with a team member in the morning, then spend the afternoon facilitating a memorable onboarding experience, benchmarking compensation, managing HRIS administration, or improving a People process.
- You have good instincts. You can navigate sensitive situations, understand when something requires discretion, and know when to handle something yourself versus when to bring in the right leader or external resource.
- You don't need someone telling you what to do every step of the way. You see what needs attention, prioritize it, and get moving.
- You like variety and you're comfortable being pulled into whatever is most important. People & Culture touches everything, and you enjoy being part of the action.
- You care about the experience people have at work. You notice the little things, whether it's how someone is welcomed on their first day, how a difficult conversation is handled, or whether employees actually feel heard and supported.
- You want to work somewhere that has ambition without the corporate bureaucracy. People here care about winning, growing, and doing exceptional work, but they also care about their families, friends, hobbies, travel, and having a life outside of work.
IN THE ROLE, YOU WILL:
- Own day-to-day People & Culture operations across the full employee lifecycle, ensuring every stage—from onboarding and 30/60/90-day check-ins through performance management, employment changes, milestones, and offboarding—is handled thoughtfully and consistently.
- Be a trusted partner to leaders and team members across the organization, providing practical guidance on employee matters, performance, policies, and employment legislation—with the judgment to navigate sensitive situations and involve external legal counsel when needed.
- Lead key annual, company-wide People processes, including performance and compensation reviews, bonus administration, and employee engagement surveys—ensuring each is thoughtfully planned, clearly communicated, and delivered accurately and on time.
- Prepare employment agreements, letters, compensation updates, and other documentation, ensuring every detail is accurate, current, and clearly communicated.
- Partner closely with Finance to ensure payroll changes, compensation, advantages, and other employee-related administration are handled accurately and on time.
- Help create an employee experience that people genuinely enjoy by supporting engagement initiatives, company events, recognition initiatives, Learning & Development,
and the moments that make BTA feel like a outstanding place to work.
- Use employee feedback, engagement surveys, and day-to-day interactions with the team to identify opportunities to improve the employee experience and make practical changes where they matter.
- Support employer branding initiatives that showcase our people and culture, helping bring the BTA employee experience to life both internally and externally.
- Own the administration and integrity of our People systems, primarily BambooHR, ensuring employee records, documentation, workflows, policies, SOPs, and the Team Guide are accurate and up to date.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- 3+ years of experience in People & Culture, Human Resources, People Operations, or a similar broad HR role.
- Experience owning or supporting the employee lifecycle within a growing organization, ideally in a company of approximately 30-70 employees.
- Strong knowledge of employment legislation across Canada, with particular experience supporting employees and leaders in BC and Alberta.
- Experience across core HR functions including onboarding, offboarding, performance management, employee relations, compensation and benefits.
- Experience working independently and taking ownership of a broad range of People & Culture responsibilities rather than operating exclusively within a specialized HR function.
- Strong HRIS experience, ideally with BambooHR, including employee records, workflows, reporting, and administration.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust quickly with both leaders and team members.
- Sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential information and sensitive employee situations.
- Experience maintaining, or improving HR processes, SOPs, policies, templates, or employee documentation.
- A practical, hands-on approach. You're comfortable rolling up your sleeves, figuring things out, and owning work from beginning to end.
THE BENEFITS
- Step into a People & Culture role where you'll work closely with leadership, gain meaningful exposure across the full employee lifecycle, and use that experience to accelerate your career.
- Join a growing, founder-led company where you can know the people you work with and see the impact of your work every day.
- Work alongside - and learn from - ambitious, thoughtful people who care deeply about doing outstanding work and genuinely enjoy working together.
- Be part of a culture that values quality of life. We work hard, but we also care about family, friendships, travel, hobbies, and having a life outside of work.
- Enjoy a competitive compensation package, including a strong base salary, RRSP matching, extended health benefits, and paid time off.
- Enjoy amazing travel perks and company events in epic locations, with our team events this year ranging from the warm beaches of Cabo to the serene outdoors in Canmore.
If this sounds like you and you feel ready to take on an awesome new adventure, use the application form below and let us know why you'd be a great fit for our team!
We thank you for your time and interest. We will reach out directly to shortlisted applicants.
