JOB PURPOSE
Nurse Managers (NM) are accountable for the safe, effective, and efficient operations of their assigned unit and/or service. This is accomplished by demonstrating leadership competencies as outlined by Horizon's standards (CCHL LEADS). Patient safety, positive outcomes, staff engagement that support psychologically safe and positive work environments are key drivers of success in this leadership role.
This is a professional nurse leadership role in the management of Horizon Health Network's Obstetrics Clinics within the Women and Children's Health Program, including but not limited to: prenatal care, maternal fetal medicine, women's wellness, obstetrics and newborn follow up. It entails management over operations including; clinical care delivery, Human and Financial Resources, equipment procurement/management, scheduling and resource allocation and alignment to the strategic focus of the clinical program and Horizon Health Network.
The Nurse Manager will be accountable for the delivery of the program's strategic objectives and for the planning, implementing, organizing, and evaluation of patient care activities in the assigned unit/service. They are responsible for the quality of services provided, as well as the effective and productive utilization of resources.
The Nurse Manager will work within the LEADS framework of Horizon Health Network with accountability to lead self, engage others, achieve results, develop coalitions, and implement systems transformations within the assigned areas of responsibility. These include working within the program's lines of business, fiscal and resource stewardship, managing and developing staff, effective communication, quality and risk management and health workplace management.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Nursing
- Licensed with the College of Nursing of New Brunswick (CNNB) in good standing or eligible for license.
- Minimum of five (5) years recent relevant clinical experience.
- Three (3) years experience in a progressive leadership role
- LEADS Program or willing to acquire within 18 months of hire.
- Demonstrates management competencies - leadership, resource management, conflict resolution skills, sound judgement, advanced decision-making, communication skills, and effective negotiation.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and foster positive collaborative interpersonal relationships with various stakeholders.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, be organized and flexible to respond to needs.
- Strong written and verbal skills such as technical reports and presentations with the ability to respond to short timelines.
- Analytical problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of program development, implementation, and evaluation
- Knowledge of quality improvement and project management
- Knowledge of staff and patient safety initiatives
- Strong knowledge of the Baby Friendly Initiative standards and process and how it contributes to maternal and child health
- Proven computer technology skills such as Microsoft applications.
- Required to possess a valid driver's license and transportation with the ability and willingness to travel to care areas under the responsibility of this posting
- Good previous work and attendance record
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
It is expected that the Nurse Manager utilizes a high level of prioritization and time management skills while performing a broad range of the listed Horizon Health Network core management and leadership competencies during daily work. Work responsibilities may change as necessary to achieve the strategic goals of Horizon Health Network.
Clinical
- The Nurse Manager works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary teams.
- Regular presence in the clinics, to build teams and support staff.
- Work with the staff to review staffing and care assignments, round on patients, lead daily huddles and support nursing staff as required.
- Respond to patient/family concerns at the unit level through formal mechanisms (Patient Representative).
- Resource and Operations Management
- Works with the respective Clinical Director and/or Program Executive Director to align planning with strategic directions and identified needs for each respective unit/program.
- Understands the purchasing process and uses it appropriately.
- Understands and utilizes a patient and family-centred care approach to delivering services to the public.
- Effectively manages employee performance utilizing appropriate processes (coaching, performance review, performance management, employee attendance). Ensures annual certifications are completed.
- Manages scheduling (UKG™), workload, and assignments.
- The Nurse Manager is fiscally responsible for the resources entrusted to them (financial, material, human). This is achieved by monitoring expenses, ensuring cost control measures, and balancing with quality outcomes of care.
- Effectively manages workplace occupational health and safety issues.
- Analyzes monthly financial, labour distribution reports and ensures alignment to their Plan(s) of Establishment. Assess, acquire quotations, and collate capital equipment capital equipment requirements for their unit(s) to the clinical director.
- Utilizes organizational information systems (eBHR, Meditech) to their full potential.
- Maintains knowledge of and follows collective agreements, and grievance process.
- Maintains knowledge of and follows industry (accreditation Canada) and professional standards (NANB, ANBLPN).
- Authors technical reports as required. Examples include brief notes, work plans, incident reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Leads the recruitment, selection, hiring and orientation of new staff in consultation with the Clinical Directors and the Human Resources Department
- Leads regular staff meetings.
- Participates in program meetings and any meetings that are assigned.
