Legal Aid - Montreal Laval is seeking a lawyer to join its Provincial Criminal Law Duty Counsel Service to fill an indefinite-term replacement position.
Outside the regular business hours of community legal aid offices, our lawyers provide an essential service to individuals held in police custody.
For more than 50 years, we have provided legal aid services to residents of Montreal and Laval. We coordinate the activities of twelve offices and have approximately 115 lawyers and nearly 200 employees. Every day, our mission is to inform and support our clients in resolving their legal issues.

Your responsibilities
Working from home, you will respond to calls from detained individuals, inform them of their rights, and provide legal advice on criminal and penal matters, youth law, immigration law, and health law.
The selected candidate may also be called upon to:
- Appear during daytime hours before the Criminal and Penal Division of the Court of Québec, the Municipal Court, and the Youth Division of the Court of Québec,
in support of lawyers from the relevant offices
- Provide coverage for permanent lawyers who are absent from their duties in youth and criminal law matters
- Assess financial eligibility and determine coverage for legal services in accordance with the Legal Aid Act and its regulations
- Handle various assignments, including appearances, bail hearings, and the intake and management of assigned files
- Manage a caseload, including client meetings, court representation, and negotiations
- Perform any other duties related to the practice of law
What we are looking for
- Hold a law degree and be a member in good standing of the Barreau du Québec
- Be available to work a rotating schedule, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
- Demonstrate robust client-service skills and excellent oral and written communication abilities in French and English
- Demonstrate excellent judgment and strong legal reasoning
- Be comfortable working in demanding environments requiring composure, rigour, and efficiency
- Be able to communicate effectively with a diverse clientele, including individuals who may be vulnerable or in crisis
- Demonstrate autonomy, professionalism, and adaptability
- Demonstrate a strong team spirit and excellent collaboration skills
- Have at least one year of experience in criminal law (an asset)
- Have knowledge of the Act respecting legal aid and the provision of certain other legal services (an asset)
