The Durham District School Board acknowledges that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships, both historic and modern, with the territories upon which our school board and schools are located. Today, this area is home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We acknowledge that the Durham Region forms a part of the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, the Mississauga Peoples and the treaty territory of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation.
It is on these ancestral and treaty lands that we teach, live and learn.
This statement was co-created in partnership with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island.
This is a one year contract position starting September 2, 20267 until June 30, 2027.
This is a school-based teaching position and does not carry a responsibility allowance.
1.0 FTE MLL Teacher (Secondary)(one year contract)
This teacher will be assigned to secondary schools in Durham and will provide system support to ensure anti-oppressive, inclusive,
equitable, and accessible programming for Multi- Language Learners (MLLs). The successful candidate will work collaboratively with school teams in the provision of service. This teacher reports to the Superintendent of Education,
who is responsible for MLL, and to the System Lead for MLL
Responsibilities The successful candidate will:
- Provide relevant, responsive, and culturally sustaining programming and
instruction to Multi-Language Learners
- Deliver an MLL/ELD credit course program, MLL/ELD resource support, or a sheltered
course option that provides MLL students with access to grade-level content while intentionally focusing on language development through adapted instruction and supports the subject matter comprehensibility.
- Provide MLL/ELD programming leadership for teachers, with a strong focus on
capacity-building.
- Collaborate with educators to support lesson plans grounded in the science of
learning, explicit instruction, and accessible pedagogical practices, ensuring all learners, especially MLL students, can access the curriculum
- Support literacy development across subject areas using structured literacy
approaches and evidence-based practices aligned with the science of reading
- Develop and share curriculum support materials; lead professional learning; and
respond to requests for assistance from principals and teachers
- Monitor and support MLL/ELD student achievement using a range of assessment data
- Administer STEP assessments and utilize universal screeners, diagnostic tools, and
literacy programs to inform instruction and interventions Required Qualifications And Demonstrated Expertise The successful candidate must demonstrate:
- Experience working with MLL/ELD students in secondary settings
- Demonstrated expertise in structured literacy and/or proficiency in an additional
language (strongly preferred)
- Deep understanding of the science of reading, including experience with
literacy screeners, diagnostic assessments, and intervention programs to support diverse learners
- Strong ability to coach educators through reflective practice, with a focus on
explicit teaching and improving student outcomes
- Strong knowledge and skill in developing relevant and purposeful instructional
programs to support integration of MLL students into classrooms, schools, and communities
- Robust literacy instructional skills across subject areas
- Experience implementing anti-oppressive, equitable, and inclusive teaching and
learning strategies
- Strong digital and technological skills to support planning, programming, and
implementation
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
- Creative and innovative approaches to planning practical and culturally relevant

grounded in the science of learning
- Collaboratively designing instruction that reflects structured literacy principles and
equitable access
- Ensuring all students, particularly MLL learners, benefit from high-quality,
evidence-based instruction across disciplines
Qualifications
- Ontario Teacher’s Certificate (OCT)
- ESL Part One qualification
- FSL (French as a Second Language) qualification is considered an asset
- Fluency in Pashto, Farsi, and/or Urdu is considered a strong asset
