4thCLASS ENGINEER Buckley Bay Casual TheOpportunity This is a unique chance to join the crewof theBayne Sound Connector, the only cable ferry within our fleet.This positionis inBuckley Bay,within the desirable Comox Valley region,this role offers an ideal coastal location with easy access to Vancouver Island’s outdoors, communities, and amenities. In this role,you’llbe responsible formaintaining, monitoring, and repairing engine room machinery, equipment, and spaces on board.You’llwork in a hands-on environment where yourexpertisedirectly supports safe and reliable service. As a casual officer with BC Ferries,you will be guaranteeda minimum of 15 days of work per month.

The Role

Reporting to the Senior Chief Engineer, you will:

- Carryout pre-sailing routine; starts up main engines and/or engine room machinery; completeshipboard checks; and shut down engines and machinery at the end of day - Conduct watchkeeping duties including monitoring pressure levels, temperature levels, and condition of all equipment;maintainsfuel, lube oil,airand water levels; takessamples; handleschemicals; cleansrelated filters; and checksall plumbing and electrical systems throughout the vessel - Observesand recordsinformation in engine room logs and daily workbook; completesinspection check-off lists, maintenance logs, batterylogsand safety equipment inventory - Performsroutine maintenance on all deck, engine room, cateringmachineryand equipment; troubleshootsand repairsmechanical breakdowns; andassistswith the overhaul of major components - Overseesandassistsin the transfer of fuel, lubeoiland waste oil; takessoundings - Assistsin the annual refit; test runs emergency generator, fire sprinkler,bilgeand ballast pumps; ensuressubmersible bilge pump and compartment valves are working; servicesemergency escape breathing gear;controlsstores and inventory; and trainsAssistant Engineers - Cleans,



washesand paintsengine room equipment and spaces asrequired - Performsoccasional tasks including servicing sewage system and purifiers; testsfuel injectors; and drainsand cleansinjector cooling tanks - Performsthe duties of Junior Watchkeeper or Engine Room Assistant whenrequired - Participatesin fire and boat drills; and performs emergency duties as assigned - Providesorientation,guidanceand informal training to other employees - Performsother related duties as assigned from time to time What you bring to the team Qualifications:
- Transport Canada4thClass Motor Certificate of Competency (CoC) or higher — or an equivalent CoC from a country recognized under a reciprocal agreement with Transport Canada - Valid Seafarers Medical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to understand and create working diagrams that accurately explain system functions - Ability to diagnose basic technical problems in a logical manner and toinitiatecorrective action - Ability toidentifyinventory requirements, determineappropriate action, prioritizein accordance withproject planning and operational requirements and apply maintenance schedules - Ability to respond in a calm and assertive manner in emergency situations - Ability to liaise with all shipboard departments to promote effective vessel operation - Ability to complete tasks in a safe,logicalandtimelymanner - Ability to work independently and as part of a team - Ability tolocateand comprehend technical and non-technical information, and communicate it in a concise manner to ensure understanding - Knowledge of safety practices and procedures - Knowledge of policies and proceduresregardingenvironmental protection regulations (including OilSpill Contingency and Hazardous Waste Management)



- Knowledge of layout and operation of all ship systems, including but not limited to propulsion, electrical and piping, both ancillary and auxiliary - Knowledge of proper operation of communication equipment and radio protocol - Robust Team orientation - High levelof self-motivation and initiative - Ability to work well under pressure - Ability to establishand maintain cooperative working relationships Experience:
