This is a unique chance to join the crew of the Bayne Sound Connector, the only cable ferry within our fleet. This position is in Buckley Bay, within the desirable Comox Valley region , this role offers an ideal coastal location with easy access to Vancouver Island’s outdoors, communities, and amenities.

The Role
- Carr y out pre-sailing routine; starts up main engines and/or engine room machinery; complet e shipboard checks; and shut down engines and machinery at the end of day
- Conduct watchkeeping duties including monitoring pressure levels, temperature levels, and condition of all equipment; maintains fuel, lube oil, air and water levels; tak es samples; handl es chemicals; clean s related filters; and check s all plumbing and electrical systems throughout the vessel
- Obser ves and record s information in engine room logs and daily workbook; comple tes inspection check-off lists, maintenance logs, battery logs and safety equipment inventory
- Perfor ms routine maintenance on all deck, engine room, catering machinery and equipment; troubleshoot s and repair s mechanical breakdowns; and assist s with the overhaul of major components
- Oversee s and assist s in the transfer of fuel, lube oil and waste oil; tak es soundings
- Assist s in the annual refit; test runs emergency generator, fire sprinkler, bilge and ballast pumps; ensur es submersible bilge pump and compartment valves are working; servic es emergency escape breathing gear; control s stores and inventory; and train s Assistant Engineers
- Clean s , wash es and pain ts engine room equipment and spaces as required
- Perform s occasional tasks including servicing sewage system and purifiers; test s fuel injectors; and drain s and clean s injector cooling tanks
- Perform s the duties of Junior Watchkeeper or Engine Room Assistant when required
- Participat es in fire and boat drills; and performs emergency duties as assigned
- Provid es orientation, guidance and informal training to other employees
- Perform s o ther related duties as assigned from time to tim e
Qualifications
- Transport Canada 4th Class Motor Certificate of Competency (CoC) or higher — or an equivalent CoC from a country recognized under a reciprocal agreement with Transport Canada
- Valid Seafarers Medical
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Ability to understand and create working diagrams that accurately explain system functions
- Ability to diagnose basic technical problems in a logical manner and to initiate corrective action
- Ability to identify inventory requirements, determine appropriate action , prioritize in accordance with project planning and operational requirements and apply maintenance schedules
- Ability to respond in a calm and assertive manner in emergency situations
- Ability to liaise with all shipboard departments to promote effective vessel operation
- Ability to complete tasks in a safe, logical and timely manner
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to locate and comprehend technical and non-technical information, and communicate it in a concise manner to ensure understanding
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures
- Knowledge of policies and procedures regarding environmental protection regulations (including Oil Spill Contingency and Hazardous Waste Management)
- Knowledge of layout and operation of all ship systems,
including but not limited to propulsion, electrical and piping, both ancillary and auxiliary
- Knowledge of proper operation of communication equipment and radio protocol
- Strong Team orientation
- High level of self-motivation and initiative
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
Experience
- 12 months experience on vessels over 300 tonnes
