Applied Physics Specialist (AI Training)
About The Role
What if your deep expertise in physics could directly shape how AI understands the physical world — ensuring it never violates the laws that govern reality itself?
We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to put cutting-edge Large Language Models through their paces. Your job is to probe, challenge, and stress-test AI reasoning across the hardest problems in physics — from quantum mechanics to thermodynamics — and document exactly where and how these models go wrong.
This is a fully remote, adaptable contract role. No prior AI experience required — just world-class physics knowledge and a rigorous, analytical mind.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Design Advanced Problems —
- Craft PhD qualifying exam-level physics problems that demand multi-step logical reasoning, mathematical derivation, and deep domain knowledge across quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, and classical mechanics
- Author Gold-Standard Solutions —
- Write rigorous, step-by-step "golden responses" where every physical constant, unit conversion, and logical step is airtight and precise
- Audit AI Reasoning —
- Evaluate AI-generated solutions and simulations for physical consistency, identifying where models hallucinate physics that violates first principles
- Refine Model Behaviour —
- Provide structured, expert feedback that improves AI reasoning around constraints like conservation laws, boundary conditions, and symmetry principles
- Document Failure Modes —
- Build a systematic record of how and where AI reasoning breaks down in real physics scenarios, helping research teams target improvements
Who You Are
- Holds a PhD (completed or near completion) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
- Mastery across the core pillars: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
- Exceptional analytical writing skills — you can explain a complex derivation or physical phenomenon with clarity and precision
- Uncompromising attention to detail when it comes to units, notation, and the logical structure of a proof
- Self-motivated and reliable when working independently on task-based assignments
- No prior AI or machine learning experience required
Nice to Have
- Prior experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance for technical content
- Proficiency with MATLAB, COMSOL, Python (NumPy/SciPy), or similar computational tools
- Experience writing or reviewing research-level benchmarks or exam problems
- Background in a specialised physics subfield such as condensed matter, optics, plasma physics, or astrophysics
Why Join Us
- Work on high-impact AI projects alongside the world's leading AI research labs
- Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you, on your own schedule
- Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, intellectually engaging work
- Apply your expertise to problems that actually matter — helping ensure AI respects the fundamental laws of the universe
- Exposure to cutting-edge LLMs and direct insight into how frontier AI models are trained and evaluated
- Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
